Chapter 9 - The New Foundation

Six months later, our Gold Coast home was filled with sounds that had never existed within its walls before.
The sterile, perfectly curated modern rooms were now scattered with soft plush bears, wooden rocking horses, and baby playmats covered in colorful alphabet letters.
Our daughter, whom we named Grace in honor of the second chance we had been given, was learning to crawl across the plush living room rugs.
Every evening at five-thirty sharp, the sound of the front door opening signaled the end of Grayson's workday.
He no longer stayed at the office until nine at night reviewing lease agreements.
He threw his leather briefcase onto the entryway bench, tore off his tie, and hit his knees on the carpet with his arms wide open.
"Where's my little girl?!" he called out, his deep voice filling the house with pure, unadulterated warmth.
Grace squealed with delight, kicking her chubby legs frantically as she scrambled across the rug toward him.
Grayson scooped her high into the air, spinning her around until the living room echoed with her bright, bubbling laughter.
I stood by the kitchen island, leaning against the counter with a cup of chamomile tea, watching them with a smile that reached all the way to my soul.
"Did she take her afternoon nap?" Grayson asked, walking over to kiss my forehead while balancing Grace on his hip.
"Only after two hours of demanding to hear the story about the little engine that could," I laughed, wiping a speck of baby food from Grace's chin.
"She takes after her mother," Grayson said, his eyes softening with deep, abiding love. "Stubborn, brilliant, and impossible to defeat."
"I prefer the term persistent," I corrected playfully, wrapping my arms around his waist.
Outside, the autumn leaves were beginning to turn shades of amber and gold, reminding me of that rain-soaked night at the St. Regis nearly a year ago.

That night had been designed to humiliate me, to tear apart everything I had built, and to leave me broken on the floor of high society.
Instead, it had burned away every lingering insecurity, tested our vows in the hottest fire imaginable, and paved the way for the greatest joy of our lives.
