Chapter 24 - The Assistant Who Knew Too Much

Naomi Park had worked as Owen Pike's executive assistant for almost four years.

I knew her only vaguely.

She was quiet, efficient, and rarely attended social events.

Whenever I visited the office, she greeted me politely and returned to her work.

I had never imagined she might become one of the most important witnesses in the entire investigation.

She called Evelyn two days after Owen's suspension.

"I have information about Mr. Pike," she said.

Evelyn arranged for Naomi to meet with independent investigators and company counsel.

Grayson and I were not included in the initial interview.

That was deliberate.

We wanted the evidence handled properly, without anyone later suggesting that we had pressured an employee.

By evening, Evelyn called us with an update she was permitted to share.

"Naomi identified internal messages directing employees to preserve certain contracts while deleting others."

Grayson frowned.

"Did anyone comply?"

"That's being examined. Fortunately, some records were retained in company backups."

"What else?"

"She also identified a delegated administrator account that Owen's department used to access executive systems."

I felt my heart race.

"Could it explain the Christmas photograph?"

"Possibly."

The technical review later revealed that an unauthorized user had accessed a company-linked archive containing copies of family photographs used for charitable holiday materials.

The account activity had been disguised through privileged internal credentials.

The unauthorized nursery image appeared to have come from a separate household monitoring account.

Investigators were tracing how those credentials had been obtained.

Grayson listened to the findings without speaking.

When Evelyn finished, he looked almost physically ill.

"Owen came to our house," he whispered.

I knew exactly what he meant.

Owen had eaten at our dinner table.

He had watched Grace open birthday presents.

He had laughed with Grayson while our daughter crawled across the living room.

And somewhere during those ordinary moments, he had been gathering information that could later be used against us.

"He's not coming near our family again," I said.

Grayson nodded.

That evening, Naomi asked to speak with me privately, with Evelyn present.

She arrived carrying a small handbag and wearing a nervous expression.

"Mrs. Hale, thank you for seeing me."

"Please call me Claire."

She sat across from me.

For a moment, she stared at her hands.

"I should have spoken up sooner."

"What did you know?"

"I knew Owen was negotiating with people connected to Caldwell. I didn't know anything about forged adoption documents until the allegations became public."

She looked up.

"But I knew he wanted Grayson removed."

"How?"

"Because he kept asking me to prepare projections showing what the company would be worth if certain assets were sold under new leadership."

I frowned.

"Which assets?"

"The South Loop properties. Several industrial parcels. And a controlling interest in the proposed affordable housing development."

Grayson had spent years designing that project.

It was supposed to provide mixed-income housing, public parks, and neighborhood infrastructure.

Selling its assets under Owen's proposed structure could have stripped away many of the promised community protections.

Naomi continued.

"Three months ago, I overheard a telephone call."

"Who was Owen speaking to?"

"I couldn't hear the other person. But he said, 'Once the custody dispute starts, Grayson won't be thinking about shareholder votes.'"

My hands went cold.

"Did you write it down?"

She nodded.

"I keep detailed work notes. I saved the date and time."

Evelyn asked whether Naomi had preserved the original records without altering them.

"Yes."

"Good. The independent investigators will need to examine them."

Naomi hesitated.

"There's one more thing."

She pulled a folded sheet from her handbag.

It was a copy of an internal calendar entry.

Owen had scheduled a meeting with Rhea Caldwell six months earlier.

The meeting title was simple.

FAMILY CONTINGENCY REVIEW.

I stared at the words.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know," Naomi answered.

"But the meeting notes referenced Grayson's adoption application, foundation donations, and a proposed public relations response."

My stomach twisted.

Our family had been treated like a corporate weakness to be analyzed and exploited.

Naomi began crying.

"I'm sorry. I thought it was just aggressive business planning."

I reached across the table.

"You came forward when you understood what was happening. That matters."

She nodded through her tears.

After the meeting, I drove to the hospital to visit Amelia.

She was recovering well and would soon be discharged.

When I entered her room, she was sitting upright with her phone in her lap.

Her face was pale.

"Claire, somebody posted my old eviction records online."

I looked at the screen.

A gossip account had published photographs of Amelia's past housing notices, unpaid medical bills, and employment history.

The caption described her as an unstable woman trying to exploit wealthy adoptive parents.

It was vicious.

And carefully timed.

"They're trying to make me look like a terrible mother," Amelia whispered.

I sat beside her.

"None of this proves you're a terrible mother."

"But people believe it."

I took her hand.

"Then we keep telling the truth."

Amelia shook her head.

"I'm tired, Claire."

Her voice cracked.

"I'm tired of being treated like I'm worth less because I don't have money."

I wrapped my arms around her.

And for the first time, she hugged me back.

Then my phone rang.

It was Evelyn.

"Claire, someone has submitted an emergency custody request in Amelia's name."

I looked at Amelia.

Her face went blank.

"What request?"

Evelyn took a breath.

"It demands Grace's immediate removal from your home."

Amelia shook her head violently.

"No. I didn't authorize that."

May you like

Evelyn's next words made my blood freeze.

"The filing includes what appears to be Amelia's signature."
