Chapter 7 - The Legal Avalanche

The morning news cycles exploded across the nation with front-page headlines and viral video clips:

"BILLIONAIRE WIFE DESTROYS EXTORTION PLOT LIVE ON STAGE AT ST. REGIS."

"CARTER HAYES ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR SECURITIES FRAUD LINKED TO STAGED PREGNANCY SCANDAL."

Inside the executive conference room of Hale Development Group, our senior corporate counsel, Evelyn Reed, laid out a stack of federal indictment filings.

"The Securities and Exchange Commission froze Carter Hayes’s offshore trading accounts at seven this morning," Evelyn reported, a satisfied smile on her face.

"They found direct wire transfers totaling one hundred and fifty thousand dollars to Vanessa Monroe's personal checking account over the last four months."

Grayson reviewed the spreadsheets, his eyes sharp and focused. "What about the criminal charges against Vanessa?"

"The district attorney is charging her with grand larceny by extortion and conspiracy to commit market manipulation," Evelyn answered.

"Her defense attorney reached out an hour ago begging for a plea deal. They are offering full state's evidence against Carter Hayes and his brother in exchange for probation and mandatory restitution."

I sat beside Grayson, holding a warm cup of coffee, feeling no malice, only relief that the nightmare was officially behind us.

"Tell the district attorney we don't want her in prison while she's carrying a child," I said quietly, looking at Evelyn.

Evelyn paused, glancing between me and Grayson in surprise. "Claire, she tried to ruin your reputation in front of the entire country."

"The child didn't choose its mother," I replied firmly. "And that baby shouldn't be born in a county correctional facility because of adults' greed."

Grayson looked at me, his eyes softening with an expression of profound, unconditional respect.

"We agree to the plea on three conditions," Grayson said, turning to our attorney.

"First, she signs a permanent lifetime non-disclosure and restraining order protecting Claire and our family. Second, she surrenders every dollar Carter paid her to establish an educational trust for her child."

"And the third?" Evelyn asked, pen poised over her legal pad.

"She issues a full, unreserved public retraction on the exact same social media platforms she used to spread her lies," Grayson stated with cold, unyielding finality.

Evelyn closed her portfolio with a sharp click.

"Consider it done, Mr. Hale. They'll sign before lunch."
