Chapter 1 - Shadows in the Marble Sanctuary

The man in the charcoal gray overcoat lowered his smartphone the exact second Alessandro’s gaze locked onto him. In the high-stakes underworld of East Coast logistics and covert power, hesitation was fatal, but paranoia was survival. Alessandro Moretti didn't flinch. He stood tall, towering over six feet of disciplined muscle, his expensive Italian tailored suit stained with mud, mountain foliage, and drying child’s blood.
Beside his polished shoes, Max let out a low, vibrating growl from deep within his chest. The battered German Shepherd’s ears flattened against his skull, instincts razor-sharp despite the white veterinary gauze wrapped around all four torn paws. Max sensed a predator.
Luca Bianke stepped forward instantly, his hand slipping into his coat toward the concealed holster beneath his arm. ""Boss, you want me to take him outside and see who paid for his phone bill?""
""Not here,"" Alessandro murmured, his voice like gravel grinding under heavy steel. ""This is a hospital. We don’t make a mess where my blood is currently keeping a little girl alive. Giovani, flank the exits. Don't let him leave the parking pavilion until we know who signed his paycheck.""
The man in the gray coat pivoted on his heel and walked briskly toward the sliding glass doors into the chilly morning fog. Giovani melted into the corridor shadows behind him like an assassin through mist.
Alessandro turned back to the pediatric intensive care unit. Through the reinforced observation glass, five-year-old Sophia lay framed beneath sterile white sheets. Monitors beeped in a fragile, rhythmic cadence. The arterial repair had held, but her tiny chest rose and fell in shallow, vulnerable waves. The blood flowing into her IV line was his own rare AB-negative—a biological match that defied statistical probability.
He touched the cold glass, his thumb hovering over the silhouette of her small, square jawline. It was his mother’s chin. His sister’s jaw. The undeniable architecture of the Moretti bloodline etched into porcelain innocence.
""Alessandro,"" Luca whispered, holding a leather folder. ""The lab technician is ready. Under state hospital protocol, since there is no legal guardian conscious to authorize non-emergency genetic screening, we cannot officially test her DNA without Isabella's legal consent or a court order.""
""I am not a monster who steals swabs from a comatose child,"" Alessandro replied without looking away. ""We wait until Isabella opens her eyes. I want the truth directly from the woman who stole six years of my life.""

At that moment, a junior nurse sprinted from the north wing, her sneakers squeaking frantically against the linoleum. ""Dr. Costa! Room 314! The trauma patient from the ravine—she’s coding!""
Alessandro’s heart slammed against his ribs like a sledgehammer. Isabella.
