Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

On our eighth wedding anniversary, Grayson booked the private rooftop garden of the Peninsula Hotel overlooking the shimmering lights of the Chicago skyline.
There were no photographers, no corporate sponsors, and no livestream cameras broadcasting our dinner to the world.
There were only three chairs: one for Grayson, one for me, and a high chair for Grace, who was happily munching on roasted carrot sticks.
The city lights twinkled like a sea of diamonds beneath the dark November sky, reflecting across the clear glass terrace.
Grayson stood up from the table, walked around to my side, and reached inside his jacket pocket.
He pulled out a sleek velvet jeweler's box, setting it gently beside my plate.
"Gray, you already gave me an anniversary gift this morning," I smiled, looking up at him.
"Open it, Claire," he whispered softly.
I opened the box.
Inside was a delicate platinum necklace holding a pendant shaped like an open doorway, framed by two brilliant sapphire stones and a flawless diamond in the center.
"What does this represent?" I asked, my fingers tracing the cool, exquisite metal.
"It represents the doorway in the photograph," Grayson explained, his voice thick with quiet emotion as he knelt beside my chair.
"The doorway Vanessa thought would tear us apart, but instead showed me the true strength of the woman I married."
He took my left hand in his, kissing the back of my fingers with tender devotion.
"For seven years, I thought my job as a husband was to shield you from the ugliness of my world. I treated you like someone fragile who needed to be protected from every shadow."
He looked up into my eyes, his slate-blue gaze clear and completely open.
"That night on the stage, you showed me that you weren't standing behind me, Claire. You were standing beside me, holding the light that guided me out of the dark."
Tears of pure happiness welled up in my eyes, spilling over my cheeks as I leaned down to kiss his lips.
"We stand together, Grayson," I whispered against his mouth. "Always."
Grace let out a loud, happy babble from her high chair, waving her wooden spoon in the air as if seconding the motion.

We both broke into laughter, turning to scoop our daughter into our arms together beneath the starlit sky.
The city rumbled below us, vast, ambitious, and endlessly busy, but inside the circle of our arms, our world was complete, peaceful, and entirely unbreakable.
