Chapter 44 - The Nephew With Grayson's Eyes

Oliver Whitmore opened the front door wearing dinosaur pajamas and holding a plastic spaceship.

When he saw Grayson, his eyes widened.

For one heartbreaking second, he looked exactly like Andrew in the photographs Natalie had shown us.

Then he asked the question none of us expected.

"Are you my daddy's brother?"

Grayson knelt.

"Yes, buddy. I am."

Oliver studied him seriously.

"Mommy said you might come."

"Is that okay?"

Oliver considered the question.

"Do you like dinosaurs?"

Grayson smiled.

"Very much."

"What's your favorite?"

Grayson glanced at me.

I shrugged helplessly.

He looked back at Oliver.

"Tyrannosaurus rex."

Oliver nodded approvingly.

"Good answer."

Natalie began crying.

I stepped beside her and gently squeezed her hand.

We had traveled to Boston for a private family visit.

No reporters.

No corporate lawyers sitting at the dining room table.

No discussions about inheritance.

Just an uncle meeting his nephew for the first time.

Oliver led Grayson into the living room and showed him an elaborate construction of toy dinosaurs surrounding a cardboard volcano.

For nearly an hour, they played on the carpet.

Watching them, I remembered Grace's first months with us.

The way Grayson had been terrified of holding her incorrectly.

The way fatherhood softened parts of him that business success never could.

Now he was discovering another kind of love.

The love of an uncle who had arrived too late to know the child's father but not too late to become part of his life.

Later, Natalie showed us Andrew's study.

It was a small room overlooking the backyard.

Books lined the shelves.

A photograph of Oliver sat beside the computer.

On the wall hung a framed drawing made by a much younger Oliver.

Three stick figures stood beneath a bright yellow sun.

Mommy. Daddy. Me.

Grayson stared at the picture.

"He had a good life here."

Natalie nodded.

"He did."

She smiled sadly.

"Not perfect. But good."

I looked at her.

"That's important."

Natalie wiped her eyes.

"Andrew loved being a father. He promised Oliver he'd never let him feel unwanted."

Grayson swallowed.

"He kept that promise."

"Yes."

She opened a drawer and removed a small wooden box.

Inside was a silver pocket watch.

"Andrew's father gave him this when he turned twenty-one."

Grayson examined it.

Richard Hale's initials were engraved on the back.

"He gave me one exactly like it," Grayson whispered.

Natalie nodded.

"Andrew used to joke that Richard found it easier to buy matching watches than introduce his sons."

The attempt at humor made us both smile sadly.

Then Natalie handed Grayson a folded note.

"Andrew wrote this after Oliver was born."

Grayson opened it.

If I ever meet my brother, I want him to know that I don't blame him for our father's silence.

Grayson pressed the paper against his chest.

Natalie began crying again.

I stepped away to give them privacy.

Outside the study, Oliver was waiting.

"Miss Claire?"

I knelt.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

He held up his spaceship.

"Do you have kids?"

"I have a little girl named Grace."

"Is she nice?"

"Very nice."

"Does she like dinosaurs?"

"She's more interested in dragons."

Oliver looked impressed.

"Dragons are okay."

I laughed.

Then he leaned closer.

"Can I tell you a secret?"

"Of course."

He whispered, "Mommy cries when she thinks I'm sleeping."

My heart broke.

I brushed his hair back.

"Sometimes grown-ups cry because they miss someone."

"I miss Daddy."

"I know."

He looked toward the study.

"Uncle Grayson looks like him."

"He does."

Oliver thought carefully.

"Does that mean Daddy sent him?"

I felt tears rise.

"I don't know what your daddy would say, sweetheart."

I smiled gently.

"But I think he'd be happy that you have more people who love you."

Oliver nodded.

Then he offered me his spaceship.

"You can borrow this."

I accepted it solemnly.

"That's very generous."

"It's for when you're sad."

I hugged him.

That evening, we returned to our hotel.

Grayson stood beside the window for a long time.

"Andrew was a good father," he whispered.

"Yes."

"I wish I'd known him."

I wrapped my arms around his waist.

"I know."

He turned toward me.

"Claire, whatever happens with Sebastian, I want Oliver protected."

"Then we make sure he is."

Grayson nodded.

But before we could say more, Evelyn called.

Investigators had recovered a new document from one of Andrew's old email backups.

It was a meeting invitation.

Dated the morning of his fatal accident.

The organizer's name appeared beneath the address.

Malcolm Pierce.

And the meeting subject contained three words.

Final Silence Agreement.
