Chapter 4 - The Vanishing Alibi

"You're right, Vanessa," I said, my voice cutting through her frantic screech with effortless authority.

"A biological reality cannot be erased. Which is why yesterday morning, my legal team petitioned the family court for an emergency expedited review."

Vanessa flinched, clutching her belly tighter as if trying to shield herself from the spotlight.

"What are you talking about?" she whispered, backing toward the rear curtain.

I signaled to the audio-visual booth at the back of the room.

A new document appeared on the eighty-foot screen: a certified medical record bearing the official seal of the Chicago Fertility and Genetics Institute, dated five days ago.

"Two weeks after you launched your private harassment campaign," I told the six hundred stunned guests, "my husband voluntarily submitted to comprehensive genetic sequencing and reproductive medical evaluation."

Grayson stepped up beside me, taking my hand in his, his fingers warm, strong, and unwavering.

"Ten years ago, before I ever met Claire," Grayson announced into the microphone, his voice ringing with absolute certainty, "I underwent a private surgical procedure following a severe sports injury in college."

He looked directly at Vanessa, who was now trembling visibly from head to toe.

"The medical records on that screen confirm that I have been biologically sterile for over a decade. Claire and I have been working with our fertility specialists on private adoption pathways for the past two years."

The revelation detonated across the ballroom like an explosive charge.

Several prominent investors stood up from their seats, openly laughing and pointing at the stage.

Vanessa’s knees buckled. She had to reach out to grab the velvet curtain to keep from collapsing onto the floorboards.

"No..." she whimpered, tears of genuine terror finally spilling down her powdered cheeks. "That’s impossible... you never told anyone..."

"Because my husband's private medical history is none of your business," I replied, stepping toward her with absolute composure.

"You built an entire extortion scheme based on an outdated college relationship and a staged photograph, assuming the quiet wife would simply write you a twenty-million-dollar settlement check to make the scandal go away."

"I... I loved him!" Vanessa cried out, completely unhinged now as the livestream comments flashed rapidly on the side monitors, mocking her every word.

"You didn't love him, Vanessa," I said softly, looking down at her with nothing left but cold, clinical pity.

"You loved his balance sheet. And unfortunately for you, my husband's security team isn't the only authority that reviewed your files this week."
