Chapter 8 - Healing the Broken Pieces

Two months after the St. Regis gala, the media storm had completely vanished, replaced by the quiet, golden warmth of early spring.

Vanessa’s public confession and apology had cleared every lingering shadow from Grayson’s name, while Carter Hayes was sentenced to seven years in federal prison for securities fraud.

Hale Development Group’s stock had reached an all-time high, but the boardroom was no longer the center of our universe.

Every Saturday morning, Grayson and I drove thirty miles outside the city to the St. Vincent Children’s Haven, a private adoption and foster care sanctuary nestled in the rolling green hills of Illinois.

We had spent three months completing background checks, home visits, and psychological evaluations, preparing our lives for the family we had dreamed of building for a decade.

"Are you nervous?" I asked, adjusting Grayson's collar as we parked our SUV outside the administration building.

"Terrified," Grayson admitted with a boyish grin, his hands resting on the steering wheel.

"I've closed ten-billion-dollar commercial contracts with foreign governments, Claire. But walking into this room feels like the biggest day of my life."

I laughed softly, leaning over to kiss his cheek. "You're going to be an incredible father, Gray."

We walked through the sunlit corridors of the sanctuary, guided by Sister Margaret, the director of maternal and infant placement.

She led us to a quiet, sun-drenched nursery overlooking a small garden filled with blooming tulips.

In the center of the room sat a wooden crib with white lace bumpers.

Inside, sleeping peacefully under a soft yellow knitted blanket, was a four-month-old baby girl with dark, wispy hair and rosy cheeks.

"Her mother surrendered her at the regional clinic three weeks ago," Sister Margaret whispered, smiling warmly at us.

"She left a note saying she wanted her daughter to be raised by parents who knew how to protect each other against the world."

Grayson walked toward the crib with slow, reverent steps, as if walking on sacred ground.

He leaned over the wooden rail, his massive hand trembling slightly as he gently brushed his knuckles against the baby's soft cheek.

The little girl stirred, letting out a tiny, sweet yawn, and her dark blue eyes fluttered open to look up at him.

May you like

A single tear rolled down Grayson's cheek, catching the morning sunlight, and as I walked up beside him, he turned to look at me with his whole heart in his eyes.

"Claire..." he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "Meet our daughter."
