Chapter 5 - The Hand Behind the Curtain

Two uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department stepped onto the side of the stage, accompanied by an investigator from the state attorney general's financial crimes division.
The music had stopped completely, leaving only the relentless clicking of digital cameras capturing Vanessa's total disgrace.
"Vanessa Monroe?" the lead investigator asked, pulling a set of legal documents from his folder.
"You are being served with a court summons for attempted corporate extortion, wire fraud, and grand larceny."
Vanessa looked around frantically, searching the sea of elite faces for an ally, a patron, or a friend.
Every single person looked away, disgusted by the sheer audacity of her scheme.
"I didn't do this alone!" Vanessa suddenly screamed, pointing an accusing finger toward the back of the VIP tables.
"He told me it would work! He said Grayson would settle out of court to protect the stock price before the merger!"
The room went completely still as heads turned toward the rear corner of the ballroom.
Sitting at table fourteen, frozen with a glass of champagne halfway to his mouth, was Carter Hayes.
Carter was Grayson's former chief investment officer, who had been quietly dismissed six months earlier following an internal audit into unauthorized foreign land holdings.
Carter slammed his glass onto the table, scrambling to his feet to push his way toward the exit doors.
"Hold him right there," Detective Miller commanded into his radio.
Two security officers intercepted Carter at the double oak doors, pinning his arms behind his back before he could cross the threshold into the lobby.
"Carter promised me five million dollars from the shorted stock options!" Vanessa sobbed hysterically, dropping to her knees on the stage.
"He paid for the fertility treatments! The baby's father is Carter's brother in Atlanta! They needed Grayson's stock to tank so their hedge fund could buy out the downtown land parcels for pennies on the dollar!"
The entire ballroom erupted into complete bedlam.
What had started as a sordid tabloid scandal had unraveled into a multi-million-dollar securities conspiracy in front of six hundred high-net-worth witnesses.
Grayson turned to the event coordinator, nodding once.
The security team gently helped Vanessa to her feet, escorting her down the private service ramp away from the flashing cameras and the blinding lights.
Grayson stepped back to the center of the podium, his posture straight, his presence commanding the room with effortless grace.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Grayson said, a warm, confident smile returning to his face. "Now that the entertainment has concluded, I believe we have a ten-billion-dollar revitalization project to announce."
The room erupted into thunderous, standing applause, the sound shaking the very walls of the St. Regis ballroom.
