Chapter 9 - The Trial In The Headlines

Three weeks later, the federal courthouse in lower Manhattan was swarmed by hundreds of reporters, flashing cameras, and television broadcast vans. The headline dominated every newspaper and digital feed across the globe: THE UNDERCOVER BILLIONAIRE AND THE OVERNIGHT ANALYST: HOW A $20M MAFIA SKIMMING SYNDICATE WAS CRUSHED FROM WITHIN.
Inside the grand courtroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Damian Vance sat at the defense table in prison jumpsuits, his hair disheveled, his former arrogance completely stripped away. Elliot Brace sat two chairs down, refusing to look anyone in the eye.
The presiding judge banged her gavel, commanding immediate silence across the packed gallery. ""The prosecution calls its star witness, Miss Priya Shen.""
The heavy oak doors opened. Priya walked into the courtroom with absolute grace and poise. Her cast had finally been removed two days prior, replaced by a sleek, discreet support brace. She wore a tailored charcoal business suit, her dark hair pinned back elegantly, her chin held high.
Behind her, sitting in the front row of the gallery, was Cassian Wren. He wore an immaculate three-piece navy suit, looking every bit the sovereign billionaire heir, yet his eyes never strayed from Priya, radiating fierce pride and protective devotion.
Priya took the stand, placed her right hand on the Bible, and swore the oath.
For the next four hours, her testimony was a masterclass in forensic precision. With absolute clarity and unshakeable confidence, she walked the jury through every transaction, every hidden offshore server, and every forged signature. She presented Elliot Brace's remote session logs, the covert hardware bypass in server room SR-6, and the direct financial transfers linking Damian Vance to organized criminal syndicates across three continents.
When the defense attorney attempted to cross-examine her, trying to paint her as an inexperienced entry-level worker who misunderstood complex corporate reconciliation, Priya dismantled his arguments with devastating ease.
""A discrepancy of four dollars across three accounts is a reconciliation lag, counselor,"" Priya stated coldly, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. ""A recurring divergence of nineteen point four million dollars routed into twenty-one shell corporations owned by your client is grand larceny, racketeering, and financial terrorism. The numbers do not have an agenda. They do not lie. And neither do I.""
The jury deliberated for less than ninety minutes.
When the jury foreperson read the verdict, the room erupted. Damian Vance was found guilty on all twenty-six counts of racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and securities fraud, sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Elliot Brace was sentenced to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary.
As the judge slammed down the final gavel, the courtroom dissolved into a frenzy of flashing cameras and shouting journalists.
Priya stepped down from the witness stand. Before the media could swarm her, Cass was already there. He stepped between her and the flashing cameras, wrapping a protective arm around her shoulders and guiding her smoothly through the private exit corridor reserved for federal prosecutors.
Once outside the courthouse on the private rooftop landing where his executive helicopter waited, the roar of the city faded into the background.
Priya stopped, turning to look at him. A deep, liberating breath filled her lungs. For the first time in seven months, the weight of the anomaly, the fear of the shadows, and the memory of her mother's injustice were completely gone.
""It's over,"" she said softly, a brilliant smile breaking across her face.
""It's over,"" Cass agreed, reaching out and gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered along her cheek, warm and tender. ""Your mother’s name was officially cleared in federal records this morning, Priya. I had my legal team file the petition yesterday. Her record is spotless. And the world finally knows the truth.""
Tears welled in Priya's eyes, shimmering in the afternoon sunlight. She threw her arms around Cass's neck, burying her face against his chest. Cass wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, lifting her slightly off the ground, holding her as if she were the most precious treasure in the universe.

""Thank you,"" she whispered against his skin.
""Don't thank me,"" Cass murmured into her hair. ""You saved my family's legacy. Now let me spend the rest of my life making sure nobody ever hurts you again.""
