Chapter 8 - The Syndicate's Last Stand

While the corporate battle was won, the remnants of Damian Vance's criminal network were not willing to go quietly into federal custody.

Two nights after the board meeting, as rain lashed against the panoramic windows of the penthouse safehouse, the building's perimeter alarms tripped with a silent, urgent warning.

Priya was sitting at the dining table reviewing the new internal audit guidelines when the lights suddenly flickered and shifted into low-power emergency mode.

""Cass,"" she called out, standing up immediately.

Cass emerged from the tactical communications room instantly, fully armed, his tactical vest strapped tight. His face was set in grim determination. ""Vance's right-hand lieutenant, a hitman named Viktor Vance, just breached the lower parking bay. They know the trial starts next week. They’re trying to eliminate the star witness before she can take the stand.""

""They're coming for me,"" Priya said, her voice steady despite the spike of adrenaline.

""They're coming into a meat grinder,"" Cass corrected coldly. ""Marcus and Chen have already sealed the elevator banks. Viktor brought six men. They think this is an ordinary luxury penthouse.""

He walked over to Priya, placing a sleek emergency panic button into her hand and pulling her toward the reinforced panic vault hidden behind the master bedroom closet. ""Get inside, Priya. The door is six-inch reinforced titanium alloy. It has its own independent oxygen supply.""

Priya grabbed his tactical vest with her right hand, refusing to be pushed into hiding. ""I’m not sitting in a dark box while you fight an army on my behalf! I can monitor the security grid from the terminal in the study. I can track their movements through the thermal sensors and guide your team!""

Cass looked down at her, seeing the fierce, unyielding fire in her dark eyes. Any other woman would have been crying in terror; Priya was demanding tactical command. A surge of fierce pride and deep admiration tightened his chest.

""Two minutes,"" Cass agreed, pulling her toward the secure command console in the inner hallway. ""You call the targets. I put them down. But the second anyone breaches this corridor, you lock that panic door. Do you understand?""

""Understood,"" she nodded, seating herself before the bank of thermal monitors.

Within seconds, the monitors flickered to life. Seven glowing orange silhouettes appeared on the infrared feed, moving methodically through the service stairwell toward the penthouse floor.

""They're bypassing the elevator lobby,"" Priya said into her headset. ""Three operatives taking the fire exit on the left. Four moving through the maintenance utility corridor on the right.""

""Marcus, take the utility corridor,"" Cass commanded over the tactical channel. ""Chen, hold the terrace. I'm taking the fire exit.""

Through the security cameras, Priya watched the deadly ballet unfold. Gunfire erupted in the utility corridor, suppressed pops muffled by the heavy acoustic walls of the penthouse. On screen, Marcus and Chen executed a flawless pincer movement, neutralizing two operatives before they could raise their weapons.

Suddenly, a red sensor flashed on Priya’s screen. ""Cass! Behind you! There's an eighth man—he climbed the exterior maintenance scaffolding!""

Cass reacted with inhuman speed. As the heavy glass door of the secondary terrace shattered under a tactical breaching charge, Cass rolled across the marble floor, coming up on one knee. The mercenary burst through the raining glass shards, his weapon leveled directly at the hallway leading to Priya's console.

Before the shooter could squeeze the trigger, Cass fired two suppressed rounds through the doorframe. The operative collapsed to the terrace floor, motionless.

Heavy bootsteps echoed in the main foyer. Viktor Vance stepped through the broken doorway, holding a high-caliber assault rifle, his face twisted in psychotic fury. ""Where is she, Wren?! Where is the little bookkeeper who destroyed my family?!""

Cass stepped out into the open foyer, discarding his empty sidearm and drawing a combat blade from his tactical belt. ""You're looking for the person who destroyed your family, Viktor? Look at me. I'm the one who buried your father. And I'm the one who’s sending you to join him.""

Viktor snarled, raising his rifle. But before he could fire, Priya activated the building’s fire-suppression test protocol from her console. A high-pressure blast of industrial sprinkler water and blinding strobe lights erupted directly above Viktor’s head, disorienting him for a critical half-second.

That half-second was all Cass needed.

He closed the distance like a shadow, knocking the rifle aside and sweeping Viktor’s legs out from under him. Viktor crashed heavily against the marble floor. Cass pinned him instantly, his blade resting millimeter-sharp against the hitman’s carotid artery.

May you like

""Move,"" Cass whispered in a voice so cold it froze the blood in Viktor’s veins, ""and your trial ends tonight.""

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder as dozens of federal tactical units surrounded the building. The syndicate’s last stand was over.
