Chapter 1 - The Lockdown Directive

The chill of server room SR-6 felt sharper the second Cass Wren turned his phone screen toward Priya. The single sentence glowed against the dim ambient light: You're in the building. Don't make this complicated. It was a cold, surgical directive sent from an untraceable relay, but Priya didn’t flinch. Her heart hammered against her ribs, yet her mind instantly defaulted to the rhythmic logic of numbers. If the syndicate knew they were inside the server vault, it meant the physical perimeter was already compromised.

""Who outside this company knows your true legal umbrella?"" Priya asked, her voice deliberately flat and even. She kept her fingers poised over her laptop keyboard, freezing the current encrypted snapshot of the nineteen-point-four-million-dollar ledger.

""Nobody within fifty city blocks,"" Cass replied, his voice dropping into a razor-thin timber that stripped away any illusion that he was merely a passive corporate inheritor. ""When my father died, he didn’t just leave me Castellan Research Partners. He left me a private security consortium built to dismantle black-market syndicates laundering money through sovereign debt funds. This building is a shell. The R-Consortium isn't just an external client. It’s an extortion network operated by a cartel boss named Damian Vance.""

""Elliot Brace isn't an analyst,"" Priya realized instantly, the puzzle pieces snapping together with terrifying precision. ""He’s Vance’s inside broker. That’s why he didn’t fire me when I flagged the Q-series reconciliation. He wanted to see how deep my custom script had dug before he neutralized the audit trail.""

Suddenly, the overhead cooling fans stuttered. The rhythmic humming of the hardware died, plunged into an eerie, heavy silence. The backup emergency red LEDs clicked on with a harsh metallic snap.

""They cut the primary power grid to the floor,"" Cass said, stepping smoothly between Priya and the heavy steel door. ""They’re isolating the level. If they trip the fire halon suppression system, it’ll lock the magnetic seals and flood this room with suffocating gas within ninety seconds. We move right now.""

Priya slammed the laptop shut and shoved the rugged hard drive into her satchel. As she swung the strap over her left shoulder, she caught her breath sharply, a quiet gasp escaping her throat. Her left arm hung stiffly against her side, her knuckles white as she cradled her wrist against her abdomen.

Cass’s sharp gaze caught the micro-movement immediately. His eyes dropped to the heavy wool cardigan she wore despite the warm lobby temperatures earlier that evening. ""What’s wrong with your arm?""

""It’s nothing,"" she deflected automatically, stepping toward the secondary egress hatch behind the server racks. ""It’s a hairline fracture. I tripped on the subway stairs two nights ago.""

Cass didn't argue, but his eyes narrowed with lethal intensity. He knew what defensive injuries looked like. The purple bruising peeking past her sleeve wasn't from a stumble; it was the exact imprint of a blunt strike. ""Elliot's men visited your apartment, didn't they?""

Priya met his eyes, refusing to let fear dictate her breathing. ""Two men waited outside my brownstone yesterday morning. They warned me to stop reviewing the reconciliation logs. They broke my ulna with an expandable baton to make sure I took medical leave. But they didn't take my laptop, which means they didn't know I kept offline mirrored backups. So I came to work tonight anyway. Because if I didn't finish the export, nineteen million dollars of dirty money would disappear into off-shore accounts before the sunrise wire transfers.""

Cass stepped closer, his jaw tightening into iron. The disguise of the mild corporate heir fell away entirely, revealing a man who commanded legions in the shadows. ""You broke your arm protecting my company’s integrity, while I was sitting in penthouses wondering which spreadsheet to believe.""

""I protected the data,"" she said stubbornly. ""I don't work for your family, Cass. I work for the truth of the system.""

""From tonight on, you work with me,"" he corrected, his voice leaving no room for debate. He drew a sleek, suppressed tactical sidearm from beneath his jacket—an impossible weapon for an ordinary CEO. ""The stairwells are hot. Stay on my heels. If anyone steps into the corridor, get behind me and do not look back.""
