Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Confrontation

The 48th floor of the Castellan Tower gleamed in the early morning sunlight. Polished Italian marble, brass accents, and panoramic views of the city skyline provided the perfect backdrop of corporate prestige. Inside the executive boardroom, twelve board members sat around a twenty-foot mahogany conference table, murmuring nervously.

At the head of the table stood Elliot Brace, his tailored navy suit immaculate, his silver hair neatly styled. Beside him sat Damian Vance—a broad-shouldered man in his late fifties with cold, predatory gray eyes, wearing a three-piece charcoal suit and a golden signet ring bearing a viper crest.

""Ladies and gentlemen,"" Elliot began, tapping his pen against the microphone to command the room. ""We regret to inform you that our CEO, Cassian Wren, has demonstrated severe behavioral instability over the past forty-eight hours. Following an unauthorized security breach in our data infrastructure last night, Mr. Wren has failed to report to executive headquarters. Under Section 14 of the corporate bylaws, prolonged unnotified absence during an operational crisis allows the vice chair to execute emergency asset reassignment.""

""And who authorized the emergency liquidation of the Q-series portfolio?"" a senior board member asked, adjusting his spectacles.

""I did,"" Damian Vance spoke, his deep voice carrying unquestioned authority. ""Apex Global Holdings holds the debt covenants. To protect our institutional investors from catastrophic market exposure, we will absorb the distressed assets into our private equity vehicle at eighty cents on the dollar.""

Elliot smiled, raising a leather-bound resolution folder. ""All in favor of invoking the emergency transfer protocol, please raise your—""

The heavy double doors of the boardroom were kicked open with a thunderous crack.

The heavy oak doors bounced off the walls, the brass handles embedding into the plaster. Every head turned in shock.

Cass Wren walked into the room. He wore a crisp black bespoke suit, completely devoid of dust or fatigue. His eyes were cold, predatory, and commanding. Flanking him were four armed private security officers in tactical gear, carrying federal search warrants.

And walking right beside him, her head held high and her laptop tucked under her right arm, was Priya Shen. Her carbon-fiber cast was proudly visible, a stark badge of honor against her dark blazer.

""You're calling a vote without the majority shareholder, Elliot?"" Cass’s voice rang across the silent room like a whip crack. ""That sounds remarkably close to corporate treason.""

Elliot blanched, his face turning an ashen gray. ""Cassian... you're alive. I mean, we were worried about your safety. There was an incident in the server room—""

""There was an assassination attempt in the server room,"" Cass interrupted smoothly, walking directly toward the head of the table. The board members scrambled backward, clearing a path as if parting for an apex predator. ""Two mercenaries hired by Apex Global attempted to execute an overnight analyst and stage my death as a gas leak.""

""This is slanderous nonsense!"" Damian Vance roared, slamming his heavy fists onto the mahogany table as he stood up. ""You're a boy playing with your dead father’s toys, Wren! You have no proof of these wild accusations! Security, remove these trespassers immediately!""

""Security answers to the owner of the building, Vance,"" Cass said coldly, stopping two feet away from the cartel kingpin. ""And that owner is me.""

Priya stepped forward, placing her laptop onto the center of the conference table. With a smooth tap of her uninjured hand, she connected the device to the room's high-definition projection screens.

""Thirty-eight days ago, Castellan's ledger was infected with a recursive skimming algorithm,"" Priya stated, her voice echoing clearly throughout the vast room. The giant screens instantly illuminated, displaying colorful flow charts, transaction timestamps, and authenticated IP addresses. ""Over ten months, nineteen million four hundred thousand dollars was systematically diverted from twenty-one legitimate client funds into an offshore shell entity registered in the Cayman Islands under the code name R-Consortium.""

Gasps erupted around the table as several board members leaned forward, horrified.

""And who owns the R-Consortium?"" Priya clicked a key. A scanned document appeared on screen—a notarized corporate registry bearing the signature and biometric thumbprint of Damian Vance, co-signed by Elliot Brace as the primary broker.

""That's a fabrication!"" Elliot stammered, sweat beading heavily along his forehead. ""She's an entry-level overnight analyst! She has no authority to audit executive accounts!""

""She has my authority,"" Cass said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. ""And unlike you, Elliot, her integrity cannot be bought for a seven-figure kickback.""
