Chapter 6 - The Ghost Protocol

Despite the high-profile arrests in the boardroom, the real danger was far from over. Down in the corporate network, Damian Vance's parting threat had already begun to manifest.
As Priya and Cass entered the executive suite on the fiftieth floor, Priya’s tablet pinged with an urgent crimson alert. ""Cass, look at this,"" she called out, setting the tablet on the mahogany desk. ""Vance wasn't bluffing about an automated margin call. He had a dead-man's switch embedded into the clearing software. The moment his master credential was flagged as compromised by the federal warrant, a ghost protocol activated.""
Cass leaned over her shoulder, his arm brushing against hers as they studied the cascading lines of red code. ""What does it do?""
""It’s a scorched-earth script,"" Priya explained, her fingers moving across the screen with practiced efficiency. ""It's initiating a forced sell-off across all twenty-one client portfolios. In twenty minutes, it will dump four hundred million dollars of institutional holdings onto the open market at eighty percent below fair value. It will bankrupt the firm and trigger a cascading liquidity panic across three regional exchanges.""
""Can we shut down the master server?"" Cass asked, his jaw tightening.
""If we cut the server, the incomplete transactions will freeze in clearing limbo. The exchanges will declare Castellan insolvent by noon,"" she replied, her analytical mind calculating the probabilities in seconds. ""We can't shut it down. We have to beat it. I need to write an override script that intercepts each sell order and re-routes the collateral back into our private reserve accounts before the market bell rings.""
""Marcus!"" Cass barked into his comms. ""Lock down the 50th floor. Reroute all auxiliary power to the executive suite. Nobody enters or leaves.""
Cass turned back to Priya. He pulled a high-back executive chair forward, gently easing her into it. He knelt beside her, his hand resting reassuringly over her cast. ""What do you need?""
""I need your private cryptographic key,"" she said, looking straight into his eyes. ""The sovereign vault key your father left you. It's the only credential high enough to override a hardcoded liquidation protocol.""
Cass didn't hesitate for a single second. He reached inside his dress shirt, pulling out a heavy platinum flash drive suspended on a titanium chain around his neck. He unclasped the chain and placed it into Priya's open palm.
""That key holds my family's entire net worth,"" Cass said quietly, his voice filled with absolute, unwavering trust. ""Over two billion dollars in sovereign reserves. It's yours. Do whatever you need to do.""
Priya felt the weight of the metal in her hand. For months, she had been an invisible analyst working in the cold dark of two in the morning, ignored by managers and silenced by violence. Now, the most powerful man in the city was handing her the keys to his entire world without a shred of hesitation.
""I won't let you fall,"" she whispered.
She plugged the platinum drive into her terminal. The system screen flared bright gold as the highest-tier clearance in the corporation unlocked.
""Executing counter-protocol,"" Priya announced, typing with blistering speed. Her single uninjured hand flew across the keys, inputting complex algorithms designed to trap the malicious bot inside a localized loop.
Ten minutes remained until market opening.
On the master monitor, millions of dollars in sell orders were turning from red to amber, caught in Priya’s algorithmic web. But the ghost script fought back, attempting to bypass her firewall by flooding the server with simulated traffic.
""It's overloading the processor,"" Priya muttered, sweat glistening on her brow. ""It's trying to crash the node!""
""Hold the line,"" Cass murmured, his hand resting on the back of her chair, his presence a steady anchor in the storm. ""You're better than their code, Priya. You always were.""
With three minutes left on the clock, Priya isolated the root directory of Vance's script. She typed a final sixteen-character command string, inhaled deeply, and struck the enter key.
The screens went completely black.
For five excruciating seconds, the room was silent.
Then, a soft emerald pulse rippled across the monitors. One by one, all twenty-one portfolios turned bright, stable green. The sell orders vanished. The four-hundred-million-dollar collateral balance stabilized, securely locked inside the Wren family vault.
A chime echoed across the terminal: System Normalized. Market Open Sequence Complete. Zero Capital Loss.

Priya let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for thirty-eight days, slumping back into the plush leather chair.
Cass stood over her, a slow, radiant smile transforming his usually stoic face. He leaned down, his forehead gently resting against hers for a quiet, intimate moment. ""You did it,"" he whispered. ""You saved us all.""
