Chapter 7 - The Hostile Reckoning

News of the federal raid on Castellan Tower broke across every major financial news network within hours. Cable channels broadcast footage of Elliot Brace and Damian Vance being escorted into federal court in handcuffs, while financial commentators speculated wildly about the identity of the mysterious overnight analyst who had uncovered the massive twenty-million-dollar syndicate scam.
Inside the quiet sanctuary of Cass's penthouse, the chaos of the outside world felt a thousand miles away.
Priya sat on the expansive terrace, a warm mug of herbal tea cradled in her right hand, watching the afternoon sun sparkle across the ocean. Her left arm was comfortably supported in an updated medical sling, the throbbing pain finally reduced to a faint ache thanks to Dr. Miller's care.
The terrace door slid open, and Cass stepped out, carrying two files. He had discarded his formal suit jacket, wearing a relaxed white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the lean, corded muscle of his forearms.
""The Department of Justice just unsealed the grand jury indictments,"" Cass said, leaning against the balcony railing beside her. ""Damian Vance is facing forty-five years without possibility of parole. His entire offshore syndicate has been frozen by international authorities. Elliot Brace took a plea deal twenty minutes ago. He's testifying against every corrupt official on Vance's payroll.""
Priya took a slow sip of tea, feeling a profound sense of relief wash over her soul. ""And Castellan?""
""Castellan's stock surged fourteen percent at the opening bell,"" Cass smiled, his eyes warm. ""The market loved the transparency. Investors realized the firm is cleaner and stronger than it has ever been in its fifty-year history.""
He placed the two folders on the small glass table between them.
""What are these?"" Priya asked, looking down at the crisp white documents.
""The first is your official employment contract as Chief Risk Officer, complete with full executive stock options and total independent authority over internal audits,"" Cass explained. ""Nobody will ever question your clearance again.""
Priya smiled softly, her fingers grazing the edge of the folder. ""And the second?""
Cass’s expression shifted, becoming more vulnerable, stripping away the billionaire disguise, the mafia-hunting operative, and the corporate titan. What was left was simply a man looking at the woman who had captivated his entire being.
""The second is the deed to a brownstone in the historic district,"" Cass said softly. ""Two blocks away from my family estate. It has high-grade security, private parking, and a garden. The lease on your old apartment was terminated this morning. You will never have to worry about looking over your shoulder when you walk home at night.""
Priya looked up at him, her heart skipping a beat. ""Cass... this is too much. You don't owe me a house because I did my job.""
""This isn't about owing you, Priya,"" Cass said, his voice dropping into an earnest, husky tone as he stepped closer and took her uninjured hand in his. ""When I walked into that server room last night, I was a man fighting a war alone. I inherited an empire built on secrets, surrounded by people who smiled to my face while stealing behind my back. I didn't think there was a single person left in this city who cared about what was right.""
He gently lifted her fingers to his lips, kissing the knuckles with profound tenderness. ""Then I found you. Sitting alone at two in the morning, nursing a broken arm, defying an entire cartel just because the numbers didn't balance. You showed me what real courage looks like.""
May you like
Priya felt a warm flush rise to her cheeks, her chest tightening with an emotion far more dangerous and thrilling than any financial risk analysis. ""I was terrified, Cass. Every single day for thirty-eight days.""
""You were terrified, and you stood your ground anyway,"" Cass whispered, his eyes never leaving hers. ""That’s what makes you extraordinary. I don't just want you running my company's compliance, Priya. I want you by my side. In the light, where you belong.""
