Chapter 3 - The Broken Truth

The safehouse was a fortress disguised as a minimalist penthouse overlooking the dark waters of the harbor. Floor-to-ceiling ballistic glass reflected the pale morning light creeping over the horizon. Inside, the atmosphere hummed with high-frequency communications gear and tactical monitors tracking the city's financial district.
Dr. Miller, an elderly physician with steady hands and military credentials, gently cut away Priya's sweater sleeve. The entire lower half of her left arm was swollen, mottled with dark purple and sickening green bruising.
""Clean hairline fracture,"" the doctor announced, applying a lightweight carbon-fiber cast and securing it with medical wrap. ""No displaced bone fragments, but whoever hit you used professional intimidation tactics. A few inches higher and they would have shattered your elbow joint completely. You need rest and high-grade anti-inflammatories, young lady.""
""I don't have time to rest,"" Priya insisted, testing her fingers. The rigid cast stabilized the joint, dulling the sharp, tearing agony into a manageable, throbbing ache. ""I have seven algorithms waiting to run cross-verifications across Castellan's master clearing ledger.""
Cass stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching her with an unreadable expression. He held a glass of water and two pain tablets, walking over and placing them on the table beside her laptop. ""Take the medicine, Priya. The data isn't going anywhere for the next thirty minutes.""
""You don't understand how they operate,"" she said, looking up at him fiercely. ""Elliot doesn't just forge numbers. He uses automated micro-clearing bots. Every minute the server runs without our counter-script, four hundred thousand dollars is split into twelve thousand micro-transactions that slip under federal anti-money laundering tripwires. By dawn, the money will be completely untraceable.""
""I know how they operate,"" Cass said softly, sitting down in the leather chair directly across from her. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees, his eyes boring into hers. ""What I don't understand is why you came back. Most people would have taken the warning. They would have packed their bags, caught a train out of the city, and let the rich men destroy each other.""
Priya paused, her hand lingering over the keyboard. ""My mother worked as a senior compliance officer at a regional bank fifteen years ago. She noticed a discrepancy in a series of municipal development loans. She reported it to the vice president. Three days later, she was framed for embezzlement, her credentials were wiped, and the bank collapsed, wiping out the pensions of three thousand working-class families in our hometown. She spent seven years clearing her name in court before she passed away.""
Cass’s expression darkened, an overwhelming stillness settling over him.
""She used to tell me that corruption doesn't win because it’s smarter,"" Priya whispered, her eyes burning with quiet, righteous defiance. ""It wins because the people who see it get scared and look away. I saw the anomaly thirty-eight days ago, Cass. If I look away now because someone swung a stick at my arm, then everything my mother fought for meant nothing.""
Cass reached out, his hand hovering over hers before gently resting on her uninjured wrist. His skin was warm, his touch unexpectedly tender for a man who had incapacitated two armed killers an hour earlier. ""Nobody is framing you, Priya. Nobody is wiping your credentials. And nobody is burying this truth. Not while I’m breathing.""
Marcus walked into the room, holding an encrypted tablet. ""Boss, we pulled the attendance list for the six AM emergency shareholder assembly. Elliot Brace didn't just invite the board. Damian Vance himself is attending under his registered alias, Arthur Vance of Apex Global Holdings. They hold forty-one percent of the voting proxy. With your absence, they plan to trigger the incapacitation clause in your father’s trust.""

""They think I’m dead in the server room, or running for the border,"" Cass said, standing up to his full height. A dangerous, cold smile touched his lips. ""Print the forensic reports. Priya, can your script isolate Vance’s primary clearing accounts directly from the safehouse terminal?""
""Give me twenty minutes,"" Priya answered, her fingers already flying across the keys with astonishing speed despite the cast. ""I'll make sure when they open that ledger, the whole world sees who was pulling the strings.""
