Chapter 9 - The Final Trial

The tranquility of the Moretti estate was shattered at three o'clock the following morning.
A deafening explosion rocked the perimeter gate, followed immediately by the staccato chatter of automatic gunfire echoing across the granite cliffs. The estate's red emergency lights flared to life, casting bloody crimson shadows across the high ceilings of the master bedroom.
Adelaide bolted upright in bed, adrenaline flooding her system. ""Matteo!""
Matteo was already on his feet, moving with the lethal instinct of a seasoned commander. He pulled a heavy semi-automatic handgun from the nightstand safe, chambering a round in one fluid motion, while sliding a concealed panic room key into Adelaide's hand.
""Whitcomb’s private security contractors,"" Matteo said calmly, pulling on a Kevlar vest over his dark sweater. ""The Senator’s brother controls an offshore mercenary firm. They know the federal indictment drops at sunrise, and they’re making a desperate suicide run to destroy the digital servers and eliminate the witnesses.""
""They're coming for the flash drives,"" Adelaide realized, her analytical mind immediately calculating the target. ""The backup drives are in your office safe!""
""They won't get past the courtyard,"" Matteo stated, his voice cold and lethal. ""Marco! Secure the secondary perimeter!""
Marco burst through the bedroom doorway, his rifle raised. ""Boss, they breached the south terrace! They cut the main power grid, but our backups held. We have four hostiles pinned near the library, but two slipped toward the east wing!""
""Get Adelaide to the reinforced vault beneath the wine cellar,"" Matteo ordered, checking his magazine.
""No,"" Adelaide interrupted, throwing off the duvet and pulling on a dark wool trench coat over her clothes. ""Matteo, the server room has an automated purge sequence if the physical cooling system is disconnected! If they cut the auxiliary power cables in the east hallway, twenty years of your syndicate records and all the federal evidence against Whitcomb will be vaporized!""
Matteo looked at her, his jaw set in stone. ""It’s too dangerous, Adelaide.""
""I wrote the security protocol for that vault, Matteo!"" she insisted, stepping directly in front of him, her amber eyes burning with absolute determination. ""You hired me to protect your empire. Let me do my job. We do this together, or we don't do it at all.""
Matteo stared at her for a fraction of a second, seeing the unyielding warrior beneath the quiet exterior. A fierce, predatory grin spread across his face.
""Marco, cover our flank,"" Matteo commanded. ""Adelaide, stay behind me.""
They moved through the darkened corridors of the mansion like phantoms. Gunfire echoed from the lower levels, glass shattering as Moretti’s loyal soldiers systematically cut down the invaders. As they reached the entrance of the east wing server room, a shadow detached itself from the doorway—a heavily armed mercenary raising a silenced assault rifle directly at Matteo’s chest.
""Down!"" Adelaide screamed.
Without hesitation, Adelaide grabbed a heavy bronze bust of Marcus Aurelius from an antique pedestal and hurled it with all her strength against the man's knees. The mercenary stumbled, his weapon discharging harmlessly into the ceiling plaster.
Matteo didn't waste half a second. Stepping forward with brutal precision, he disarmed the man with a single sweeping strike and drove his fist into the mercenary's temple, dropping him instantly to the floor.
""Now, Adelaide!"" Matteo shouted, positioning himself at the doorway to hold off two incoming attackers advancing down the corridor.
Adelaide sprinted into the server room. The cooling indicators were flashing amber—the mercenary had indeed severed the primary refrigerant lines. In less than two minutes, the drives would overheat and trigger an irreversible thermal wipe.
Her fingers flew across the mechanical override terminal. She bypassed the damaged cooling grid, redirected the emergency liquid nitrogen reserves from the backup medical bay, and initiated a secure, encrypted cloud transfer directly to the server of the Boston District Attorney's office.
Transfer Complete. System Stabilized.
On the screen, a green confirmation light blinked steadily.
Outside in the corridor, the gunfire suddenly ceased.
Adelaide walked to the doorway, her chest heaving, to find Matteo standing amid the settling smoke. Four mercenaries lay disarmed and restrained on the marble floor as Marco and six guards secured the area.
Matteo turned around, his eyes sweeping over Adelaide to ensure she didn't have a single scratch. He dropped his weapon to his side, walked straight toward her, and pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her dark hair as she wrapped her arms around his neck.

""It’s over,"" Adelaide whispered against his shoulder. ""The evidence is in the hands of the Attorney General. No one can touch us now.""
Matteo held her tightly against his heart, his voice thick with emotion. ""You saved this family tonight, Adelaide. You saved me.""
