Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledger

Matteo’s private office was an expansive sanctuary lined with thousands of leather-bound volumes, floor-to-ceiling glass windows facing the crashing waves below, and a massive mahogany desk covered with multi-monitor workstation setups displaying complex global trading feeds.

Matteo walked behind the desk, poured two glasses of amber scotch, and pushed one across the polished wood toward Adelaide.

""I don't drink,"" she stated plainly.

""Then leave it,"" he replied, settling back into his heavy leather chair and unbuttoning his suit jacket. ""Tell me, Adelaide. Who handles the forensic auditing at Jones Capital?""

Adelaide's guard instantly went up. ""My father's senior partner, Arthur Vance.""

Matteo gave a dry, mocking laugh that sent a shiver down her spine. ""Arthur Vance couldn't find a leak in a bathtub if he was drowning in it. For the past eighteen months, several dummy corporations have attempted to siphon thirty million dollars out of my shipping logistics network through Jones Capital's escrow accounts.""

Adelaide tightened her grip on the strap of her bag. ""They didn't succeed.""

""No, they didn't,"" Matteo agreed, his eyes narrowing like a hawk fixing upon its prey. ""Because every time Vance’s department cleared the fraudulent invoices, an anonymous internal auditor with administrative tag 'A-7' rerouted the funds, flagged the illicit shell companies, patched the algorithmic vulnerabilities, and silently returned fourteen million dollars back into my escrow holding accounts.""

The air left Adelaide's lungs. She stared at him, her heart thumping violently against her ribs.

""A-7,"" Matteo continued, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper as he pulled a thick manila folder from his drawer and tossed it onto the desk. The folder slid across the wood and stopped right in front of her. ""For six months, my cybersecurity division has been trying to breach the identity of 'A-7'. Whoever that ghost was, they were a genius. They understood the mechanics of international money laundering better than the Federal Reserve, and they were single-handedly keeping your father’s firm from collapsing into criminal indictment.""

Adelaide didn't open the folder. She didn't need to. Inside were printed logs of her late-night work—the hours she spent sitting in her freezing attic bedroom while Chloe was out partying, untangling the filthy web of transactions her father had naively signed off on.

""Why didn't you just confront my father?"" Adelaide whispered.

""Because your father didn't steal that money, Adelaide. He was the fall guy,"" Matteo revealed, leaning forward, resting his elbows on the desk. ""The person embezzling from me was Arthur Vance, partnered with Preston Whitcomb’s family.""

Adelaide’s eyes widened in genuine shock. ""Preston? Chloe’s fiancé?""

""The very same,"" Matteo said with cold satisfaction. ""They needed Jones Capital to take the blame for thirty million dollars of missing syndicate funds. When I demanded the fifteen-million-dollar collateral or a daughter, I knew Rockford would never give up his precious socialite Chloe. I knew he would cast out the daughter he despised. I didn't send for Chloe, Adelaide. I engineered this entire debt trap to force your family to deliver you directly to my front door.""

The room spun slightly around her. All her life, Adelaide had been treated like garbage, an embarrassment to be hidden away behind locked doors while others took credit for her intellect. And here sat the most ruthless underworld figure on the East Coast, telling her that he had moved mountains just to put her in this chair.

""Why?"" she asked, her voice trembling slightly for the first time. ""What do you want from me?""

Matteo stood up, his towering silhouette framed against the raging storm outside the window.

""I don't need a terrified hostage, Adelaide,"" he said, holding out a hand toward her. ""I need a queen. I need a brilliant mind to help me burn our mutual enemies to the ash they deserve. Marry me tomorrow morning, take command of the Moretti financial empire, and together, we will destroy every single person who ever made you feel worthless.""
