Chapter 10 - The Sovereign of Boston

Six months later.
The summer sun shone brilliantly over Boston Harbor, reflecting off the glass facade of the newly renovated sixty-story skyscraper that now dominated the financial district skyline. Above the grand entrance, engraved in pristine platinum lettering, hung the new company crest: Moretti & Jones Global Investment Partners.
Inside the top-floor corner office, overlooking the entire panorama of Massachusetts Bay, Adelaide sat at an expansive desk made of reclaimed walnut. She wore a tailored white silk suit that radiated effortless authority, her raven hair falling loosely over her shoulders, the scar on her face visible and gleaming under the morning light like a badge of royal honor.
A gentle knock sounded at the door. Her executive assistant, a young woman whom Adelaide had personally promoted from the mailroom, entered with a silver tray.
""The morning press clippings, Mrs. Moretti,"" she said warmly.
Adelaide picked up the front page of the Boston Globe.
The headlines told the complete story of justice served: Former Senator Whitcomb and Son Sentenced to Twenty-Five Years in Federal Penitentiary for Racketeering; Arthur Vance Pleads Guilty to Multi-Million-Dollar Fraud. Further down in the society section was a smaller, almost forgotten blurb: Jones Family Assets Liquidated; Socialite Chloe Jones Declares Personal Bankruptcy Following Boutique Failure in South Beach.
Adelaide folded the paper and set it aside without a trace of malice or triumph. Chloe and Evelyn had built their lives on vanity and cruelty, and they had drowned in their own shallow waters. Adelaide had moved so far beyond them that their names felt like distant memories from a previous lifetime.
The private double doors clicked open, and Matteo stepped inside.
He looked devastatingly handsome in a light gray bespoke summer suit, carrying a bouquet of rare black orchids. Across his face was the soft, genuine smile that he reserved exclusively for her. Behind him, the entire city of Boston bowed to his name, but within these four walls, he was simply the man who had looked at her scars and seen the woman of his dreams.
He set the flowers on her desk and bent down, capturing her lips in a deep, lingering kiss that left her breathless.
""Are you ready for lunch, Boss?"" Matteo teased gently, resting his hands on the armrests of her chair, trapping her within his embrace.
""I have two more portfolio approvals, Mr. Moretti,"" Adelaide replied with a playful smirk, touching his silk tie. ""Some of us actually work for our billions.""
Matteo laughed, a rich, vibrant sound that filled the sunlit office. ""The entire board of directors voted unanimously to give you the rest of the day off. In fact, your husband insists upon it.""
Adelaide leaned back into her chair, looking up at him with eyes full of deep warmth and unshakeable peace. For twenty-four years, she had lived in the dark, believing she was unloved, invisible, and broken. Now, she was the sovereign of an unstoppable financial empire, respected by thousands, feared by her enemies, and deeply, unconditionally cherished by the most powerful man in the city.
Matteo reached out, his thumb gently caressing the scar on her cheek, his gray eyes shining with infinite devotion.
""Happy anniversary, my queen,"" he whispered softly.

Adelaide smiled, placing her hand over his, her wedding ring catching the dazzling summer sun.
""Happy anniversary, Matteo,"" she replied, rising to her feet and intertwining her fingers with his. ""Let’s go home."""
