Chapter 5 - The Metamorphosis

The next morning, Adelaide woke not to the dingy wallpaper of her attic bedroom, but to the gentle rustle of Egyptian cotton sheets inside a master guest suite that was larger than the entire third floor of the Jones estate. Sunlight poured through expansive bay windows, illuminating a crackling marble fireplace and an adjoining dressing room that looked like a boutique on Fifth Avenue.

A soft knock sounded at the door. Marco entered, accompanied by four women pushing rolling racks draped in garment bags.

""Good morning, Mrs. Moretti,"" Marco said respectfully, bowing his head slightly.

The title sounded foreign, almost dangerous to Adelaide’s ears. ""Adelaide is fine, Marco.""

""The Boss left instructions before he departed for the docks this morning,"" Marco explained. ""Tonight is the annual Whitcomb Foundation Winter Gala at the Boston Symphony Hall. Your presence is required.""

Adelaide stepped out of bed, running a hand through her uncombed dark hair. ""The Whitcomb Gala? Chloe and Evelyn have been preparing for that event for four months. Chloe bought a dress from Paris specifically for it.""

A faint, wicked smirk touched Marco's otherwise stoic face. ""Then it would be terribly impolite to keep your sister waiting. Mr. Moretti hired the best stylists in New York. They have three hours.""

What followed was a transformation unlike anything Adelaide had ever experienced. For years, Evelyn had forced her to wear baggy clothes in drab shades of gray and beige, insisting that bright colors drew 'unwanted attention' to her facial scar. Her stepmother had hired dermatologists who spoke in hushed, pitying tones, making Adelaide feel as though her face was a medical disaster to be concealed.

The lead stylist, a striking woman named Vivienne with silver hair and keen eyes, walked around Adelaide three times. She didn't look at the scar with pity. Instead, she gently tilted Adelaide's face upward toward the mirror.

""Bone structure from an Italian renaissance painting,"" Vivienne murmured with genuine appreciation. ""High cheekbones, porcelain skin, and these eyes... like dark whiskey. And this scar isn't something to hide, darling. It’s dramatic. It gives you an edge that these cookie-cutter debutantes could never buy.""

They went to work. Vivienne swept Adelaide's long, raven-black hair into an intricate, cascading updo that deliberately framed the left side of her face, allowing the pale jagged line to remain visible, transformed from an ugly reminder of trauma into a striking mark of survival. Her makeup was kept minimalist yet fierce—bold emerald eyeliner highlighting the gold flecks in her eyes, flawless skin, and a rich crimson lip.

Finally, they unzipped the garment bag.

Adelaide gasped softly.

It was a custom column gown made of midnight-black velvet, cut with an asymmetrical neckline that complemented the angle of her jaw. A daring slit ran up the left thigh, balanced by long, elegant sleeves that tapered at the wrists. Around her neck, Vivienne fastened a vintage diamond choker from the Moretti family vault—a cascade of flawless white stones that caught the morning light like shards of pure ice.

When Adelaide looked into the full-length mirror, she didn't see the frightened girl who had clutched paper envelopes in her father's study. She saw a woman who commanded the room before speaking a single word.

The door clicked open, and Matteo stepped into the room, dressed in a black tuxedo tailored to perfection. He froze at the threshold, his cold eyes widening almost imperceptibly as his gaze traveled from the diamonds at her throat down the curves of the midnight velvet dress, finally settling on her face.

For five long seconds, the feared underworld king of Boston was completely speechless.

""Is something wrong?"" Adelaide asked, feeling a rare flutter in her chest under his intense scrutiny. ""Does it look ridiculous?""

May you like

Matteo walked toward her slowly, dismissing the stylists with a subtle flick of his hand. When they were alone, he reached out, his warm, bare fingers gently brushing the side of her neck, just beneath her jaw. The heat of his touch sent an electric shock straight through her veins.

""You look magnificent, Adelaide,"" he murmured, his voice thick with raw admiration. ""Tonight, Boston learns who really holds the cards. Let's go remind your sister what happens when you discard a diamond for glass.""
