Chapter 1 - The Sacrificial Lamb

Adelaide Jones understood the exact moment her life had ceased to matter to the people who shared her blood. Standing in the doorway of her father’s mahogany-lined study, clutching a stack of reconciled financial ledgers against her ribs, she watched her stepmother sip vintage champagne as if celebrating a funeral.

""They'll take one look at her face and send her straight back,"" Chloe laughed, buffing her manicured nails. ""Or better yet, Matteo Moretti will put a bullet through her head and forget the debt entirely. If he kills her, at least we'll have bought ourselves some time.""

Those words should have cut deeper, but Adelaide had spent fifteen years building armor against the Jones family. When the car crash took her mother and left a jagged, pale scar trailing from her left temple down to the curve of her jaw, her father, Rockford, had slowly erased her from existence. Evelyn and Chloe had moved into their Back Bay mansion two years later, effectively shoving Adelaide into the shadows. While Chloe became the golden debutante photographed at charity galas, Adelaide became the phantom living in the attic room, quietly earning an elite accounting degree online and cleaning up her father’s catastrophic financial blunders behind closed doors.

""Is it fifteen million?"" Adelaide’s voice cut through the air, cool and steady, startling the three people near the fireplace.

Rockford went pale, his designer scotch glass trembling. ""Adelaide... you shouldn't be listening at doors.""

""I don't need to listen at doors to know you stole from a syndicate boss, Father,"" she replied, stepping into the warm glow of the chandeliers. Her plain oversized sweater and dark-rimmed glasses looked utterly out of place against their opulent furnishings. ""I spent the last three weeks tracking the bleed in your offshore accounts. You didn't just lose money on bad investments. Someone embezzled fifteen million dollars from the Moretti syndicate’s commercial real estate fund right under your nose.""

Evelyn scoffed, waving a diamond-encrusted hand. ""Nobody cares about your ridiculous spreadsheets, girl! What matters is that a monster named Matteo Moretti is demanding a bride as collateral by midnight tomorrow, or he burns this house to the ground and drags your father to the harbor in chains.""

""And Chloe has a future,"" Chloe chimed in, tossing her blonde curls. ""I'm engaged to Preston Whitcomb. His father is on the Senate Judiciary Committee! I can't be seen with a mafia brute.""

""So you send the broken one,"" Adelaide murmured, looking straight at her father. ""The one you keep hidden away so your society friends don't have to look at her flaw.""

Rockford looked down at his Italian leather shoes, unable to meet her gaze. ""Moretti only demanded a daughter of the Jones bloodline. He didn't specify who. Abby, please... think of the family. If the firm collapses, hundreds of people lose their livelihoods.""

""I am thinking of them,"" Adelaide said softly, the chill in her voice silencing the room. ""The clerks, the receptionists, the cleaners who rely on your company to feed their children. They shouldn't starve because of your cowardice and greed. I will go to Moretti's estate tonight. But let me be entirely clear: from the moment I cross his threshold, I am no longer your daughter. I am your debt, paid in full.""

Evelyn practically beamed with relief, while Chloe smirked with petty triumph. Without a word of farewell, Adelaide turned and walked up the grand staircase to pack her single worn duffel bag. She did not pack designer dresses; she only took her laptop, her ledger notes, and an old photograph of her mother.

An hour later, a sleek, heavily armored black Cadillac pulled up to the curb. Two towering men in tailored charcoal suits stood waiting in the freezing Boston rain. One of them, a man with a military fade and cold gray eyes, stepped forward to open the rear door.

""Adelaide Jones?"" he asked, his tone devoid of warmth.

""Yes,"" she answered, holding her head high despite the bitter wind whipping against her scarred cheek.

""Get in. The Boss doesn't like to be kept waiting.""

As the vehicle glided away into the dark, rainy streets of Boston, Adelaide looked back in the side mirror. In the upstairs window, Chloe and Evelyn were raising their glasses in a toast, convinced they had thrown an unwanted burden to the wolves. They had no idea that Adelaide was heading directly into the den of a predator who had spent six long months hunting for the only ghost he couldn't trace.
