Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Queen

The grand ballroom of the Boston Symphony Hall was ablaze with crystal chandeliers, golden draperies, and the elite aristocracy of New England society. Wealthy hedge fund managers, federal judges, and high-ranking politicians mingled over caviar and champagne, laughing loudly beneath the vaulted ceilings.
In the center of the room, Chloe Jones was holding court. She wore a ruffled pink couture gown, clinging tightly to the arm of Preston Whitcomb, a tall, smirking young man with slicked-back blonde hair and an air of untouchable entitlement. Beside them stood Rockford and Evelyn Jones, basking in the glow of high-society approval.
""We heard a rumor that your firm experienced a bit of liquidity turbulence yesterday, Rockford,"" a senator chuckled, swirling his vintage wine.
Rockford forced a tight, rehearsed smile, though sweat gleamed at his hairline. ""A minor administrative delay, Senator. Completely handled. The firm has never been more stable.""
""Of course it hasn't,"" Evelyn interjected, smoothing her silk skirt with smug satisfaction. ""Rockford took care of the nuisance. One must cut away the dead weight to ensure the tree flourishes, after all.""
Chloe laughed, flashing her six-carat diamond engagement ring. ""Honestly, it was a blessing in disguise. We finally got rid of—""
Before she could finish her sentence, the massive mahogany doors at the entrance of the ballroom slammed open with a thunderous echo that cut straight through the string quartet's melody.
A heavy silence swept through the hall like a wave.
Four armed security men in black suits stepped inside, clearing a wide path. Behind them walked Matteo Moretti, radiating an aura of lethal supremacy that caused even seasoned politicians to shrink back. But it wasn't the feared mafia boss who made three hundred people hold their collective breath.
It was the woman on his arm.
Adelaide moved with the poise of an empress. The midnight velvet gown hugged her slender frame, the diamonds at her neck blazing under the chandeliers, while her head was held high, displaying her pale scar with fierce, unapologetic elegance. Beside Matteo’s imposing height, she didn't look like a hostage; she looked like a queen surveying her kingdom.
Chloe dropped her champagne flute. The crystal shattered across the parquet floor, splashing alcohol over her pink satin hem, but she didn't look down. Her eyes were bulging in absolute horror.
""A-Abby?"" Chloe choked out, her voice cracking.
Evelyn turned white as chalk, grabbing her husband’s arm so hard her knuckles turned purple. ""Rockford... is that... that's impossible!""
Rockford looked as though he had suffered a stroke. His jaw hung slack as he watched his forgotten, scarred daughter walk straight toward their circle, flanked by the most dangerous man in the state.
Matteo steered Adelaide directly to the front of the Whitcomb family circle. He stopped two paces away, his cold smile cutting deeper than any blade.
""Good evening, Rockford,"" Matteo purred, his voice carrying effortlessly across the dead-silent ballroom. ""You must forgive our tardiness. My wife and I had urgent business to finalize before the festivities.""
""W-Wife?"" Rockford gasped, trembling violently.
""Allow me to reintroduce Adelaide Jones-Moretti,"" Matteo announced, his arm wrapping possessively around Adelaide's waist, pulling her flush against his side. ""The new majority owner of Jones Capital.""
Preston Whitcomb stepped forward, his face flushed with angry confusion. ""What kind of sick joke is this, Moretti? Rockford owes you fifteen million dollars! You can't just barge into my family’s foundation gala with this... this freak!""
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.
Matteo didn't shout. He didn't pull a weapon. He simply turned his icy gray eyes onto Preston with an intensity so terrifying that the young politician stepped backward, tripping over Chloe’s dress.
""Choose your next words with extreme care, Whitcomb,"" Matteo warned, his voice dangerously soft. ""The woman you are insulting doesn't just hold my name. She holds the digital encryption keys to the thirty million dollars you and Arthur Vance laundered through my logistics shell accounts.""

Adelaide stepped forward, looking down at Chloe and Preston with calm, devastating authority. She reached into her small beaded evening purse and produced a slim, silver flash drive, placing it deliberately onto the table between them.
""Hello, Chloe,"" Adelaide said, her voice smooth and venomous. ""I believe this contains the forensic audit reports Arthur Vance deleted from the Jones server at midnight. Shall we ask Senator Whitcomb to read them aloud to the federal prosecutors in the room, or would you prefer we wait until dessert?""
