Chapter 2 - The Lion's Den

The Moretti estate sat perched atop a secluded granite cliff overlooking the stormy Atlantic Ocean. Surrounded by wrought-iron security gates, towering security cameras, and armed sentries patrolling the perimeter with trained mastiffs, the sprawling limestone fortress looked more like a medieval castle than a modern billionaire's compound.

Adelaide was escorted through heavy double doors made of carved walnut into an entrance foyer dominated by a sweeping marble staircase. The atmosphere was whisper-quiet, suffocating in its absolute authority. Every guard and housekeeper stood at attention, their eyes fixed strictly forward.

""Wait here,"" the driver, whom the guards referred to as Marco, instructed before disappearing down a dimly lit hallway lined with Renaissance oil paintings.

Adelaide stood alone on the polished marble. She deliberately took off her damp coat, revealing a simple navy wool dress that fell just below her knees. She didn't bother trying to adjust her hair to conceal the pale jagged scar on her face. Her stepmother had spent a decade teaching her to be ashamed of that mark; tonight, Adelaide wore it like armor. If Matteo Moretti expected a cowering, weeping socialite begging for mercy, he was going to be severely disappointed.

Heavy, measured footsteps echoed down the grand corridor.

Adelaide turned her head slowly.

Emerging from the shadows was a man who looked carved from granite. Matteo Moretti was thirty-two years old, towering over six feet three inches tall, with broad shoulders clad in an immaculate three-piece midnight-blue bespoke suit. His dark hair was combed back sharply, exposing high cheekbones, a strong jawline shadowed by stubble, and eyes the color of winter frost—striking, observant, and lethally intelligent. A subtle silver signet ring gleamed on his right hand, bearing the crest of the Moretti syndicate.

He stopped ten paces away, his icy gaze locking onto hers.

Most people trembled in his presence; Adelaide did not even blink. She held his stare, matching his silence second for second.

Matteo’s gaze drifted from her clear amber eyes, traced the line of her cheekbone, and lingered on the jagged scar running toward her jaw. There was no revulsion in his eyes, no mockery, and no surprise. Instead, something intensely dangerous flickered behind his expression—a spark of profound, concentrated recognition.

""You aren't Chloe,"" he spoke, his deep baritone rumbling through the cavernous foyer like thunder over the bay.

""No,"" Adelaide answered, her voice ringing clear and calm. ""I am Adelaide. Rockford's only biological daughter. My family decided to send their damaged goods to clear their account.""

One of the guards behind Matteo bristled at her blunt insolence, but Matteo raised a single leather-gloved finger, instantly silencing the room. A slow, razor-thin smirk touched the corner of his lips.

""Damaged goods?"" Matteo murmured, taking slow, deliberate steps toward her until he stood so close she could smell the cedarwood, tobacco, and expensive bourbon clinging to his wool coat. ""Your father thinks very little of you, it seems. And even less of my intelligence.""

""He was afraid,"" she said, refusing to step backward. ""He thought you would kill me for the insult and give him time to flee the country.""

Matteo leaned down slightly, bringing his face level with hers. For a terrifying second, Adelaide thought he was going to strike her. Instead, his gloved fingers gently grazed the edge of her collar, brushing away a droplet of cold rain.

""Your father is an arrogant fool who cannot balance his own books,"" Matteo said quietly, his voice dropping to a velvet purr. ""Did he really believe I sent a marriage ultimatum because I wanted a spoiled trophy to show off at cocktail parties?""

Adelaide frowned, caught off guard. ""You demanded fifteen million dollars or a daughter in marriage.""

""I did,"" Matteo replied, stepping back and turning toward the double doors of his private office. ""Follow me, Miss Jones. It’s time you learn why you are really in this house.""
