Chapter 7 - The Empire Fractures

The ballroom dissolved into a frenzy of panicked whispers and frantic glances. Senator Whitcomb, standing just three feet away, turned an alarming shade of crimson as he glared at his son Preston.

""What is the meaning of this, Preston?"" the Senator hissed through clenched teeth, his political instincts screaming alarm. ""What money laundering?""

""It’s a lie, Dad!"" Preston stammered, his polished arrogance melting into desperate sweat. ""She’s insane! She was a nobody who lived in Rockford’s basement! She’s fabricating evidence to blackmail us!""

""Am I?"" Adelaide asked calmly, not taking her eyes off him. ""Then perhaps you can explain why twenty-five wire transfers, each amounting to exactly one million two hundred thousand dollars, were routed through Vance Holdings to Whitcomb PAC accounts using fake shipping manifests from Moretti Freight Lines?""

Adelaide looked past Preston toward Arthur Vance, who was currently attempting to slip toward the banquet hall’s rear exit.

""Going somewhere, Arthur?"" Adelaide called out.

Two of Matteo’s men, standing unobtrusively near the service doors, stepped into Vance's path, their hands tucked neatly beneath their suit jackets. Vance froze, turning around slowly with a look of pure dread.

""You forgot one critical detail when you altered the Jones Capital server logs on Tuesday,"" Adelaide continued, her voice ringing with the razor-sharp clarity of a master forensic auditor. ""You used my administrative profile to authorize the transfers, but you didn't realize I built a secondary mirrored ledger on a cold offline server eighteen months ago. Every alteration you made left an immutable digital timestamp, linked directly to your private IP address at your summer residence in Cape Cod.""

Chloe stepped forward, her face twisted in hysterical rage. ""You lying little bitch! You're ruining everything! I'm supposed to be married in three months! Preston is going to Washington! You're doing this because you're jealous! Because you're an ugly, scarred monster who couldn't find a man without paying off his debt!""

Before Chloe could raise her hand, Matteo moved with terrifying speed.

He didn't touch Chloe, but he stepped directly between the sisters, his massive frame radiating such raw, suffocating violence that Chloe stumbled backward, falling hard onto the carpet.

""Raise your voice to my wife again,"" Matteo said, his voice dropping into a register that made the hair on the back of everyone's neck stand up, ""and I will ensure the Whitcomb name is eradicated from the state of Massachusetts before the sun rises.""

Rockford rushed forward, his hands trembling as he tried to help Chloe to her feet. ""Matteo, please! Have mercy! Adelaide, talk to him! I'm your father! Everything I built was for our family!""

Adelaide looked at the man who had abandoned her for fifteen years, the man who had stood silent while his wife and stepdaughter discussed whether her murder would buy them time. For the first time in her life, she felt no pain looking at him. She felt only pity.

""You have no family, Rockford,"" Adelaide said coldly. ""You traded your family away when you treated my mother's memory like a nuisance and sold me to settle your debts. As of eight o’clock this morning, the board of Jones Capital has been dissolved. Under Massachusetts corporate restructuring laws, Moretti Holdings has exercised its lien rights. The company is now Adelaide Financial Services.""

She turned her gaze to Evelyn, who was clutching her pearl necklace as if it could shield her from bankruptcy.

""The Back Bay mansion was registered under the company’s corporate assets,"" Adelaide added, each word landing like a sledgehammer. ""You have until twelve o'clock tomorrow afternoon to vacate the premises. Take your designer clothes, Evelyn. Leave the keys on the marble counter.""

""You can't do this!"" Evelyn shrieked, tears of humiliation finally spilling down her powdered cheeks. ""It’s our home!""

""It was my mother's home,"" Adelaide corrected softly. ""And you desecrated it long enough.""

Turning on her heels, Adelaide slipped her hand into the crook of Matteo’s arm. Matteo looked down at her, a look of fierce, unyielding pride burning in his eyes.

""Shall we go, Mrs. Moretti?"" he murmured.

May you like

""Please,"" Adelaide replied. ""The air in here is suffocating.""

As they walked back down the grand aisle of the ballroom, flanked by armed guards and followed by the flashes of society photographers who had captured every single second of the scandal, Adelaide didn't look back once. The past was burning behind her, and for the first time in her life, she was walking toward the light.
