Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Retaliation

Three days after the Whitcomb Gala scandal exploded across the national news headlines, the city of Boston was reeling. The Department of Justice had issued immediate arrest warrants for Senator Whitcomb, Preston Whitcomb, and Arthur Vance on charges of racketeering, federal bank fraud, and illegal campaign contributions. Jones Capital’s stock had initially plunged, but Adelaide’s swift, transparent press conference—detailing the recovery of all stolen assets and guaranteeing the safety of every employee pension—had restored investor confidence within forty-eight hours.

Inside the Moretti fortress, however, the tension was thick.

Adelaide sat at the large conference table in Matteo's command center, reviewing restructuring spreadsheets late into the night. Her hair was pulled back in a simple clip, her glasses perched on her nose. She had barely slept four hours a night, yet her energy was boundless. For the first time in her life, she was building something that belonged to her.

A warm cup of chamomile tea was placed gently beside her elbow.

Adelaide looked up, surprised to see Matteo himself standing over her, holding his own mug of black coffee. He had shed his suit jacket, his crisp white dress shirt rolled up to his forearms, revealing the intricate black tattoos that twined up his muscular arms—symbols of protection, family, and survival.

""You've been staring at those screens for seven hours,"" Matteo said, his voice unusually soft. ""Even my best accountants take breaks.""

""I have to make sure the transition is seamless,"" she replied, touching the warm ceramic mug. ""If there’s a single loophole, Vance’s defense lawyers will try to tie up the assets in litigation.""

Matteo pulled out a chair beside her, turning it to face her directly. ""Vance isn't getting out on bail, Adelaide. Neither is Preston. The evidence you compiled was a masterpiece of legal destruction.""

Adelaide looked down, tracing the rim of her teacup. ""I still can't believe it's over.""

""It isn't quite over yet,"" Matteo said, his jaw tightening slightly.

Adelaide glanced at him, noting the subtle tension in his broad shoulders. ""What do you mean?""

""Your father came to my shipping warehouse this afternoon,"" Matteo revealed.

Adelaide froze. ""Rockford? What did he want?""

""He was desperate. Disheveled. Evelyn left him yesterday, taking whatever jewelry she could pawn and fleeing to Miami with Chloe. Chloe’s engagement to Whitcomb was broken by the senator's legal team, and her reputation in society is entirely dead."" Matteo paused, studying Adelaide’s reaction. ""Your father begged me to convince you to give him a seat on your new board. He swore he had changed. He said blood was thicker than water.""

Adelaide let out a dry, humorless breath. ""And what did you say to him?""

""I told him that blood means nothing if it’s poisoned by cowardice,"" Matteo answered, his eyes locking onto hers with burning intensity. ""I told him that the only reason he was still walking the streets of Boston was because his daughter has a gentle heart that refused to let him starve. I offered him a pension—just enough to rent a modest apartment in the suburbs and buy groceries. He took the check and walked away without asking how you were.""

A silent tear slipped from Adelaide’s eye, running slowly down her left cheek, tracing the pale, jagged path of her scar. She wiped it away furiously, angry at herself for feeling any remnant of grief for a father who had never loved her.

Before she could pull back, Matteo’s large, warm hand cupped her cheek.

His thumb gently caught the remaining tear, brushing softly over the scar. His touch was reverent, almost sacred.

""Don't hide from me, Adelaide,"" Matteo whispered, leaning closer until their foreheads almost touched. ""I saw you in that ballroom. You are the strongest person I have ever known. That scar isn't a flaw. It’s proof that the world tried to destroy you and failed.""

Adelaide looked into his gray eyes, seeing no darkness, no deceit—only an overwhelming, raw sincerity that made her heart race at a terrifying speed.

""Matteo..."" she breathed, her voice trembling. ""Our contract was just for business. You said—""

May you like

""I lied,"" Matteo confessed, his voice dropping into a rough, passionate whisper. ""I started tracking you six months ago because of your genius. But the more I watched you, the more I saw your courage, your quiet dignity, your unbreakable spirit. By the time I forced your father into that corner, I didn't just want an auditor, Adelaide. I wanted you.""

Before she could process his words, his lips came down on hers—tender, fierce, and full of a longing that had been buried beneath months of calculated patience. Adelaide gasped against his mouth, her hands moving instinctively to his chest, gripping the fabric of his shirt as the walls around her heart finally shattered into dust.
