Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at Hudson Yards

Rain was pouring in violent sheets over Pier 42, lightning fracturing the black sky over the Hudson River.
Inside the decaying, rusted warehouse, Ara was tied to a wooden chair, crying quietly, clutching the remaining half of her broken wand.
Vance paced in front of her, an assault rifle clutched clumsily in his trembling hands. Beside him stood Marcus Rossi and eight heavily armed mercenaries, their weapons trained on the main entrance.
""Stop crying, you little brat!"" Vance screamed at Ara. ""Your mother brought this on you! She thought she could take everything from me and give it to that mafia bastard!""
Ara looked up through her tears, her voice small but defiant. ""My daddy isn't coming for you. Mr. Dante is. And he's going to punish you.""
Vance raised his hand, furious, preparing to strike the child across the face—
BOOM!
The reinforced steel doors of the warehouse blew inward with the force of an anti-tank charge.
Concrete debris and smoke filled the air as the warehouse plunged into pitch darkness. The roar of thunder outside was instantly drowned out by the deafening crack of suppressed automatic gunfire.
Rossi's men began screaming as laser-guided red dots painted their chests. One by one, the mercenaries fell to the concrete floor before they could even squeeze their triggers.
""Fire! Shoot everything!"" Vance shrieked, firing blindly into the smoke.
A figure emerged from the shadows like an unstoppable force of nature.
Dante Moretti walked through the hail of bullets, moving with fluid, lethal grace. In his hand was a modified tactical pistol. Two shots echoed through the warehouse, and Marcus Rossi dropped to his knees, clutching his shattered kneecaps, screaming in agony.
Dante didn't even look at Rossi. He walked straight toward Vance.
Vance panicked, turning his rifle toward Ara. ""Stay back! Stay back or I swear to God I'll—""
A shadow dropped from the catwalk above.
It was Sloan.
Wearing dark tactical gear, her eyes blazing with the ferocious fury of a mother protecting her child, Sloan landed directly on Vance's shoulders, driving him to the hard concrete.
Vance screamed as the rifle flew from his grip. He rolled over, attempting to throw her off, but Sloan was relentless. She struck him across the face with the heavy butt of a secondary pistol Dante had given her, the impact breaking his nose in an explosion of blood.
""That,"" Sloan whispered, driving her knee directly into his chest, pinning him down, ""is for leaving my daughter in the cold!""
Dante stepped forward, his heavy combat boot crushing down on Vance’s right hand, shattering the bones in his fingers. Vance shrieked in agony, writhing on the floor.
""And this,"" Dante said, aiming his weapon directly between Vance's eyes, ""is for threatening my family.""
""Wait!"" Sloan yelled.
Dante paused, his finger on the trigger, his dark eyes questioning her.
Sloan walked over to Ara, quickly slicing the ropes and gathering her sobbing daughter into her arms. ""Mommy's here, baby. You're safe. Mommy's got you.""
Ara buried her face in Sloan's neck, clinging to her with all her strength.
Sloan turned back to Dante, looking at the broken, bleeding excuse of a man groveling on the floor. ""Don't kill him, Dante. Death is too easy. Let him spend the next thirty years in a maximum-security penitentiary, knowing that he lost everything. Knowing that he made me the most powerful woman in this city, and that his daughter calls another man father.""
Dante looked at Sloan, then down at Vance. A cold, dismissive smirk touched the mob boss's lips.
""As you wish, my queen,"" Dante said smoothly. He lowered his gun and whistled.
Two federal agents—deeply indebted to the Moretti family—stepped out of the shadows, accompanied by a dozen syndicate soldiers. ""Take this piece of trash away,"" Dante ordered. ""Make sure he serves his full sentence in general population.""

Vance was dragged through the mud, screaming and begging for mercy, as the heavy doors of the warehouse were shut forever.
