Chapter 3 - An Offer Written in Blood

The dawn sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, painting the clouds in shades of amber and gold. Inside the Sterling family penthouse on the Upper East Side, however, the atmosphere was pitch black.

Vance paced the length of the living room, running both hands through his disheveled hair. His black cashmere coat was thrown carelessly across a designer sofa. Vivien Croft sat at the marble kitchen island, nursing an espresso, her expression tight with annoyance.

""You told me she was completely docile, Vance,"" Vivien snapped, tapping her French-manicured nails against the counter. ""You swore she wouldn't look at the corporate filings. Now the bridge lender is demanding an independent audit, and my brother says the offshore accounts have been frozen pending a review!""

""Shut up, Vivien! Just shut up!"" Vance yelled, his face flushed. ""She's my wife! She has never done anything like this! She’s probably sitting in some municipal clinic crying her eyes out because our kid has a sore throat. I’ll track her down, tell her I made a mistake, threaten to cut off Ara's trust fund, and she'll fold. She always folds.""

The heavy front door swung open, and Beatrice Sterling stormed into the apartment, her face pale with fury. ""Vance! My country club membership was just suspended! The concierge told me my card was declined! What is that little mouse doing?""

Before Vance could answer, the front door opened again.

Harper stumbled in, dragging two designer suitcases, looking completely unhinged. ""She locked me out! The building super told me the lease was terminated because the guarantor revoked authorization! Vance, do something! I have a brunch at eleven!""

""Everyone stop talking!"" Vance roared. He grabbed his phone and dialed Sloan's number for the fiftieth time.

This time, the line clicked.

""Sloan!"" Vance bellowed into the receiver. ""Where the hell are you? Do you have any idea the chaos you've caused? Get your ass back to this apartment right now, sign the loan re-authorization, and fix my mother's and sister's accounts, or I swear to God you will never see a dime from this family again!""

A moment of dead silence hung on the line.

Then, a deep, velvety, and terrifyingly calm male voice answered:

""Mr. Sterling. If you ever speak to Sloan in that tone of voice again, I will have your vocal cords removed and delivered to your mistress as a parting gift.""

Vance froze, the blood draining instantly from his face. ""Who... who the hell is this? Put my wife on the phone!""

""Your wife is currently resting,"" the voice replied smoothly. ""And as of six hours ago, you no longer have the right to breathe the same air she does. My name is Dante Moretti. And I suggest you spend the next few hours putting your affairs in order.""

The call ended.

The silence in the penthouse was suffocating.

Vivien dropped her coffee cup. It shattered against the Italian marble, dark liquid splashing across her expensive shoes. ""Did... did that man say Dante Moretti?""

Vance’s hand was shaking so violently that his phone slipped from his fingers, clattering against the hardwood floor. He felt a cold sweat soak through his dress shirt. Everyone in high finance knew the name Moretti. If the rumors were true, Dante didn't just sue his enemies—he erased them.

""How... how does she know Dante Moretti?"" Vance whispered, staring blankly at the floor.
