Chapter 6 - Shadows on Park Avenue

The aftermath of the boardroom coup sent shockwaves through New York’s high society.
By evening, Vance Sterling had been formally arrested by federal agents on charges of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement. The press had picked up the story, plastering Vance’s mugshot across every financial publication in the country. Vivien Croft had been detained at JFK Airport trying to board a private flight to Switzerland, her passports seized and her bank accounts frozen by court order.
Meanwhile, Beatrice and Harper Sterling were facing their own private hell.
Stripped of Sloan’s financial guarantees, Beatrice was evicted from her luxury assisted-living penthouse, forced to move into a modest, state-subsidized apartment in Queens. Harper, unable to pay her astronomical credit card debts and locked out of her apartment, was bombarded by debt collectors and abandoned by all her socialite friends.
At the Moretti estate, however, a peaceful calm had settled.
Sloan stood on the stone balcony of her bedroom suite, watching the twilight settle over the rolling hills. She wore a soft cream sweater, a glass of red wine resting in her hand. For the first time in six years, she could breathe without feeling an invisible hand squeezing her lungs.
A pair of warm hands gently rested on the stone railing beside her.
She didn't need to look to know it was Dante. His signature scent of cedarwood and amber washed over her, comforting and undeniably intoxicating.
""The federal judge signed the emergency custody order an hour ago,"" Dante said softly. ""Sole legal and physical custody of Ara has been awarded to you. Vance's visitation rights have been completely terminated due to criminal endangerment and flight risk.""
A tear slipped down Sloan’s cheek, catching the light of the evening stars. She brushed it away quickly, but Dante’s fingers were already there, catching the moisture with a touch so remarkably gentle it made her heart ache.
""Why are you doing all this, Dante?"" Sloan asked, turning to face him. ""The logistics terminal in Brooklyn was secured this morning. You have your supply lines back. You don't owe us anything more.""
Dante looked at her, his slate eyes reflecting an emotion she had never seen in any man before—reverence, devotion, and a fierce, unyielding protectiveness.
""Seven years ago,"" Dante began quietly, ""before I took over my family’s syndicate, my younger brother was dying in an intensive care unit. The hospital board was preparing to pull the plug because our assets were frozen by a corrupt federal prosecutor. A junior partner at Kensington Financial stayed up for forty-eight hours straight, finding a legal loophole in corporate trusts that forced the court to release our medical funds.""
Sloan's eyes widened in realization. ""That... that was you?""
""That was you, Sloan,"" Dante said softly. ""You saved my brother's life. You didn't know who we were, and you didn't care about the Moretti name. You just saw a dying boy and an injustice that needed fixing. I promised myself then that if the universe ever gave me the chance, I would guard you with my life.""
He reached out, his thumb lightly tracing her cheekbone. ""When I saw you standing in that hospital hallway the other night, broken and alone, holding that ridiculous pink wand... I knew the universe had finally answered my prayer.""
Sloan's heart hammered against her ribs. The predatory mafia boss that the world feared was looking at her as if she were the only woman who had ever existed.
Before she could speak, a small voice called out from the doorway.
""Mommy? Mr. Dante?""
Ara stood in her fleece pajamas, dragging her blanket behind her, rubbing her sleepy eyes. ""I had a bad dream about loud noises.""
Dante didn't hesitate. He knelt down instantly, opening his arms. Ara ran straight into them, burying her face into his broad shoulder. Dante lifted her effortlessly, holding her close against his chest.
""No more bad dreams, little star,"" Dante promised, kissing the top of her head. ""No one will ever hurt you or your mommy again. The monsters are gone.""
