Chapter 4 - The Lion’s Den

Two days later, Ara was officially discharged from the hospital. Her cheeks were pink again, her eyes bright and full of life. When Dante’s black armored Maybach pulled up to the hospital entrance, two burly men in bespoke suits opened the doors with absolute deference.
""Are we going home, Mommy?"" Ara asked, clutching a massive plush bear that Dante’s staff had delivered earlier that morning.
""We are going to a new home for a little while, baby,"" Sloan said softly, smoothing down Ara's dark curls. ""A place where you can play and be safe.""
The car swept them away from the clamor of the city, heading north toward an exclusive, heavily guarded estate in the hills of Westchester. High wrought-iron gates swung open to reveal a sprawling stone manor surrounded by centuries-old oaks and immaculate gardens. Armed security patrolled the perimeter with trained guard dogs, creating an impenetrable fortress of quiet luxury.
When the car stopped, Dante was waiting at the bottom of the grand stone steps. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing faint tattoos wrapping around his muscular forearms.
As soon as Ara saw him, she let go of Sloan’s hand and ran toward him. ""Mr. Dante! Look at my bear! I named him Thunder!""
The guards visibly stiffened, unused to anyone approaching their boss with such reckless abandon. But Dante simply bent down, catching the little girl effortlessly and lifting her into his arms.
""Thunder is a very fierce name,"" Dante said, his expression softening completely. ""Almost as fierce as you. Are you feeling better, little star?""
""Much better! Mommy says we have a new castle.""
Dante looked over Ara’s shoulder at Sloan, his gray eyes darkening with unspoken promise. ""It is a castle. And no one enters unless you invite them.""
Inside, the estate was breathtaking—soaring ceilings, warm fireplaces, and shelves lined with leather-bound books. Dante had prepared an entire wing for them, complete with a sunlit nursery filled with books, toys, and an art easel for Ara.
While Ara was occupied with a kind, certified nanny who had undergone the most rigorous background check imaginable, Dante led Sloan into his private study.
The room smelled of old paper, polished cedar, and expensive bourbon. On his desk sat a massive terminal displaying multiple monitors of live financial data.
""Your father's trust fund,"" Dante began, leaning against the heavy desk. ""Vance attempted to liquidate it yesterday afternoon. He submitted a forged power of attorney to Manhattan Private Bank.""
Sloan gasped, her hand flying to her throat. ""That trust is Ara's entire future. My father worked thirty years to secure that money before he died.""
""Relax, Sloan,"" Dante said softly, stepping closer. The proximity made her breath hitch. There was a raw, commanding magnetism to him that she found impossible to ignore. ""The bank manager is a close personal associate of mine. The moment Vance walked in with the papers, the police were notified, but I had them hold off. I wanted to give you the pleasure of pulling the rug out yourself.""
Dante clicked a button on his keyboard, turning the monitor toward her. ""Apex Technologies is holding an emergency shareholder meeting tomorrow morning at ten o'clock. Vance intends to announce a buyout by an offshore consortium to cover the missing thirty million dollars. He doesn't know that I just purchased seventy percent of Apex’s outstanding mezzanine debt.""
Sloan looked at the numbers, her analytical mind instantly piecing the strategy together. ""If you call in the debt tomorrow morning before the buyout is approved, the company automatically enters technical default.""
""And under the original founding charter of Apex,"" Dante added, leaning in so close she could feel the heat radiating from him, ""the original co-founder has the legal right of first refusal to assume majority control by converting outstanding intellectual property rights.""
Sloan looked into his eyes, understanding dawning on her. ""I own the original patents. I never transferred them to Vance. I kept them under my maiden name.""

Dante smiled—a slow, dangerous, beautiful smile. ""Tomorrow, Mrs. Kensington, we walk into that boardroom together. And you take back your kingdom.""
