Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Sterling Empire

By four in the morning, Ara was resting comfortably in a quiet, carpeted penthouse suite overlooking the East River. An IV drip of high-grade antibiotics was already working, and her fever had finally broken, dropping to a manageable ninety-nine degrees. She slept soundly, clutching her plastic wand beneath a goose-down duvet.
Sloan sat at a mahogany dining table in the adjoining parlor, staring at the screen of her laptop. Beside her sat a cup of black coffee brought in by one of Dante’s stone-faced aides.
Her phone was practically vibrating off the table.
There were forty-two missed calls from Vance, seventeen from her mother-in-law Beatrice, and a string of increasingly frantic text messages from Harper.
Harper: Sloan!! The landlord just changed the electronic codes to my apartment! My luggage is on the street! Fix this right now!
Beatrice: You insolent girl! I was turned away from the private health pavilion this morning! Do you have any idea how humiliating this is? Vance will deal with you!
And finally, a voicemail from Vance, his voice slurred with panic: Sloan, pick up the goddamn phone! The bank just froze our bridge loan! They said our personal guarantee was flagged as fraudulent! Did you withdraw your signature?! Call me right now or I swear to God you’ll regret it!
A soft knock sounded at the suite door, and Dante entered, followed by an older man carrying a thick leather briefcase.
""Marco is my chief legal counsel,"" Dante said, gesturing to the man. ""He has spent the last two hours reviewing the financial disclosures you pulled from Apex Future Technologies.""
Marco opened the briefcase and slid a heavy stack of documents across the table toward Sloan. ""Mrs. Kensington, your husband isn't just an unfaithful spouse. He is an embezzler. Over the past eighteen months, he has funneled approximately thirty-two million dollars from company reserves into shell corporations registered in the Cayman Islands under Vivien Croft’s maiden name.""
Sloan's hands clenched. ""He told me the company was struggling with cash flow. He asked me to cut household expenses, to delay Ara’s private preschool tuition, to make sacrifices.""
""He was building an escape hatch,"" Marco explained. ""The twenty-four million dollar bridge loan you were listed as personal guarantor for was designed to collapse the company. Vance intended to default, let the bank seize your personal family trust to cover the loss, and walk away clean with Vivien and thirty million dollars in offshore cash.""
A wave of cold nausea washed over Sloan, followed instantly by a searing, crystalline rage. Vance hadn't just neglected their daughter; he had actively plotted to ruin them, leaving Sloan and Ara destitute while he played happy family with Vivien and her son.
Dante pulled out a chair opposite her and leaned forward, his dark eyes burning with quiet intensity. ""He underestimated you, Sloan. He forgot that the brains behind his empire belonged to the woman he left standing in the cold.""
""What do you want, Dante?"" Sloan asked, meeting his gaze without flinching. ""A man like you doesn't save a sick child and offer forensic accounting out of the goodness of his heart.""
""Direct. I like that,"" Dante said, a faint smirk touching his lips. ""Vance Sterling recently acquired a logistics firm in Brooklyn. He thought he was expanding into maritime freight. In reality, he bought a transit hub that sits directly across my supply corridors. I want it back. But more than that, I despise men who treat loyalty like a bargaining chip.""
Dante tapped the file on the table. ""Help me dismantle him legally, financially, and completely. In exchange, you and Ara will have the absolute protection of the Moretti family. You will walk away with every cent Vance tried to steal from you, and he will never touch a single hair on your heads again.""
Sloan looked toward the bedroom door, where her daughter was finally sleeping peacefully. The frightened, obedient wife had died beneath the fireworks at Hudson Yards.

""Tell me what you need me to do,"" Sloan said.
