Chapter 1 - The Stranger in Room 412

""And you?"" the man asked. His voice was a low, resonant rumble that seemed to steady the chaotic room.

Sloan looked down at her bare fingers, where an angry red indentation still marked the place her wedding ring had lived for six years. Her blouse was rumpled, her eyes burned from held-back tears, and her spine felt like brittle glass. Yet, beneath the crushing weight of betrayal, an unfamiliar steel was hardening in her chest.

""I’m done being invisible,"" Sloan answered quietly.

The man studied her. Up close, his presence was overwhelming. His slate-gray eyes held the cold precision of someone who dealt in life and death, but the lines around his eyes softened slightly as he looked between her and Ara. ""I am Dante Moretti,"" he said simply.

The name hit the room like a sudden drop in barometric pressure. Even exhausted, Sloan knew who he was. Dante Moretti was the undisputed sovereign of New York’s underworld, a shadowy titan whose legitimate real estate empire was matched only by the whispered terror of his syndicate. Politicians bowed to him, prosecutors lost evidence against him, and Wall Street tycoons crossed the street to avoid his path.

""Sloan Sterling,"" she responded, catching herself immediately. ""No. Just Sloan Kensington.""

A glimmer of amusement surfaced in Dante’s eyes. ""I know who you are, Mrs. Kensington. Or rather, I know what you did six years ago for Sterling Capital. The algorithm that restructured their subprime debt was pure genius. Wall Street assumed Vance Sterling wrote it. I knew better.""

Before Sloan could process the shock of him knowing her past, Ara stirred. The little girl opened her glassy eyes, coughing weakly. She saw the towering figure beside her bed and shrank back toward Sloan. ""Mommy... who is the big man?""

Dante did something that stunned the two armed guards lingering out in the corridor. He knelt down beside the low pediatric mattress, placing himself at eye level with the five-year-old child. His expression transformed, shedding every ounce of predatory menace.

""I am the man who brought your wand back, princess,"" Dante murmured, his voice surprisingly gentle. ""A powerful sorceress should never lose her magic.""

Ara blinked, her tiny fingers curling around the glittery plastic star. ""Did you see the fireworks?""

""I did,"" Dante said softly. ""They were loud and foolish. Real stars don't explode and disappear. They stay right where they belong."" He glanced up at Sloan as he spoke the last sentence, the gravity of his words clear.

A doctor burst into the room, tablet in hand, clearly intending to bark orders until he spotted Dante. The physician froze mid-stride, swallowing hard. ""Mr... Mr. Moretti. We didn't expect you back on the pediatric floor so soon.""

""This child has an aggressive bacterial infection,"" Dante said, rising fluidly to his feet. The warmth vanished instantly, replaced by absolute command. ""Why hasn't the head of pediatric infectious disease examined her personally?""

""He's... he's at home, sir, on call—""

""Bring him in,"" Dante commanded. ""Transfer Mrs. Kensington and her daughter to the private penthouse suite on the ninth floor immediately. Charge everything to my foundation. If this little girl spikes another degree, I will hold you personally responsible.""

""Wait,"" Sloan interrupted, stepping forward. ""Mr. Moretti, this is extremely generous, but I cannot accept charity from a stranger. I can pay for my daughter's care.""

May you like

""It isn't charity, Mrs. Kensington,"" Dante replied, turning toward the doorway. ""Consider it an advance on services rendered. Your husband just committed business suicide tonight. And you are going to help me bury him.""
