Chapter 5 - When the Past Comes Crawling

The morning of the shareholder meeting, the executive conference room on the fiftieth floor of the Apex Tower was packed with nervous investors and board members. Rumors of financial irregularities had leaked to the press, and the company's stock was already tumbling in pre-market trading.

Vance stood at the head of the long glass table, adjusting his silk tie with damp hands. Beside him sat Vivien Croft, looking chic in a cream-colored business suit, though her forced smile couldn't entirely hide the panic in her eyes.

""Gentlemen, please,"" Vance announced, projecting a confidence he didn't feel. ""The rumors you've heard are completely unfounded. We have secured an international investment partner who is prepared to inject fifty million dollars of liquid capital into Apex today. We simply need unanimous board approval to issue the new preferred shares.""

""And what about the bridge loan default?"" an older board member demanded. ""The bank froze our primary credit lines this morning! They said your personal guarantor backed out!""

Vance waved a dismissive hand. ""A minor administrative error caused by my wife's emotional instability. We are currently in the process of finalizing an amicable separation, and my legal team is correcting the documentation as we speak. Sloan has no authority over this company.""

The heavy double doors of the conference room swung open with a resounding thud.

""That is a lie, Vance,"" a clear, ringing voice echoed through the room.

Every head turned.

Sloan walked into the boardroom, and an audible gasp rippled through the executives. She looked radiant, powerful, and utterly transformed. She wore a tailored midnight-blue pantsuit, her dark hair cascading in elegant waves over her shoulders, her chin held high with an aura of regal authority.

And walking half a step behind her, exuding pure, lethal elegance in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, was Dante Moretti.

Four towering private security guards flanked the entrance, effectively sealing the room.

Vance’s face drained of all color. He grabbed the edge of the podium for support. ""Sloan? What... what are you doing here? You can't just barge into a private board meeting!""

""I am the registered owner of forty percent of the founding equity, Vance,"" Sloan said calmly, advancing down the length of the table. ""And as of eight o'clock this morning, the owner of the core intellectual property that powers every single algorithm this company uses.""

Vivien jumped to her feet, her voice shrill. ""Security! Get this woman out of here! She doesn't belong here!""

Dante slowly stepped forward, his slate eyes locking onto Vivien. The sheer coldness of his gaze made the woman physically recoil and sink back into her chair.

""The building's security team answers to me now, Ms. Croft,"" Dante said, his voice quiet yet commanding enough to silence the entire room. ""Just as the debt notes your brother illegally brokered are now held by Moretti Capital.""

Dante signaled to Marco, who walked in and dropped a massive stack of blue-bound dossiers in front of every board member.

""What you have in front of you,"" Sloan announced, turning to the board, ""is the complete forensic audit of Apex Future Technologies over the last eighteen months. It details the systematic embezzlement of thirty-two million dollars by Vance Sterling, routed directly to offshore accounts held by Vivien Croft.""

Shouts of outrage erupted around the table. Board members began frantically flipping through the pages, their faces turning red with fury.

""This is ridiculous! It's a setup!"" Vance screamed, slamming his fists down. ""She's bitter because I'm leaving her! She forged these documents!""

""Every transaction is authenticated by federal bank routing numbers and forensic blockchain tracing, Vance,"" Sloan said, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. ""You thought I was just the quiet little wife who managed your household and wiped your daughter's tears. You forgot that I was the one who built this company while you were still pretending to be a CEO.""

Marco stepped forward, addressing the room. ""Under Section 14 of the corporate bylaws, any executive officer found guilty of gross fraud against the corporation is immediately stripped of their voting rights and terminated for cause. Mrs. Kensington, holding forty percent of equity and supported by the primary debt-holder, Mr. Moretti, hereby assumes interim control of Apex Future Technologies.""

""You can't do this to me!"" Vance lunged toward Sloan, his eyes bloodshot with rage. ""You ungrateful bitch, I gave you everything—""

He didn't even make it two steps.

Dante moved with terrifying speed. In a fraction of a second, his hand shot out, gripping Vance by the throat and slamming him violently against the glass wall overlooking the Manhattan skyline. The heavy reinforced glass cracked under the impact.

Vance gasped for air, his feet dangling inches off the floor, his face turning purple as Dante's grip tightened like a vise of solid steel.

""I warned you,"" Dante whispered into Vance's ear, loud enough for only him to hear. ""I warned you what would happen if you raised your voice to her. The only reason your neck isn't broken right now is because Sloan wants you to watch yourself lose everything first.""

Dante dropped Vance to the carpet like a sack of garbage.

""Call the police,"" Sloan said to the board, not sparing her ex-husband a second glance. ""And have them escorted out.""
