Chapter 8 - The Paper Trap

Arthur Vance’s aristocratic sneer vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, sudden dread that stiffened his spine.

""What shell accounts?"" Arthur demanded, his voice losing its booming confidence. ""Our corporate structure is fully vetted by international compliance standards!""

""Not Account 882 at the Bank of Bermuda, Mr. Vance,"" Ryan replied calmly, stepping closer to the massive screen.

""Over the last fourteen months,"" Ryan laid out, pointing to a series of red transfer lines, ""Marcus Vance has been siphoning four point two million dollars from your senior mezzanine fund into an unlisted software firm registered under his personal alias in the Virgin Islands.""

Marcus’s jaw dropped. The room erupted into stunned gasps as the senior board members leaned forward to examine the verified wire confirmation numbers.

""That's... that's impossible!"" Marcus stammered, his face draining of all color until he looked like wet plaster. ""Those records are private! How did you access those servers?""

""You used Celeste’s public executive Wi-Fi network last night while waiting for your table, Marcus,"" Ryan revealed with a slight, mocking smirk.

""You connected your corporate tablet to an unencrypted commercial router,"" Ryan explained. ""My colleagues at naval cyber-reconnaissance unraveled your secondary encryption keys before the dessert cart even made its rounds.""

Arthur Vance turned slowly toward his son, his face turning a deep, apocalyptic shade of crimson.

""Marcus..."" Arthur whispered, his hands trembling with suppressed, terrifying fury. ""Did you steal four million dollars from our primary partnership fund?""

""Dad, no! It was an operational reserve! I was hedging against the tech sector!"" Marcus cried, backing away from the table, raising his hands in sheer terror.

""And that's not all, Mr. Vance,"" Vivien interjected smoothly, standing up to join Ryan at the head of the room.

""Under Title 18 of the United States Code,"" Vivien announced, ""attempting to execute a hostile debt-swap takeover of a defense-cleared logistics firm using misappropriated funds constitutes corporate espionage and grand wire fraud.""

Sarah opened the boardroom doors once more.

Waiting in the reception hallway were four federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, accompanied by two armed United States Marshals carrying an active federal arrest warrant.

""Marcus Vance,"" the lead agent announced, stepping across the threshold. ""You are under arrest for federal securities fraud, interstate transport of stolen funds, and conspiracy to commit commercial extortion.""

Marcus screamed, clutching his father’s jacket, begging for help as the marshals stepped forward, secured his wrists in heavy steel handcuffs, and hauled him backward toward the elevators.

Arthur Vance sat frozen in his chair, an old, defeated man watching his family dynasty crumble into radioactive ruin because his arrogant son couldn't treat a waiter with basic human respect.

""The meeting is adjourned, Mr. Vance,"" Vivien said quietly, gesturing toward the exit. ""Have a pleasant day.""
