Chapter 4 - The Midnight Ride

Ryan turned to face Vivien, looking down at his uniform, then across at the pale, trembling general manager.

""I believe my shift has just been permanently concluded, Ms. Sterling,"" Ryan replied with a subtle, dry smirk.

Christian Moreau wrung his hands desperately, stepping forward with pleading eyes. ""Ryan... Mr. Carter! Please, there's no need for hasty decisions! We can discuss a promotion to floor captain! A salary increase!""

""Send my final paycheck to my mother's address, Christian,"" Ryan said calmly.

He unbuttoned his white service apron, folded it with crisp military precision, and laid it neatly on the host station.

He walked into the staff lockers, threw on his dark wool peacoat over his white dress shirt, and emerged five minutes later looking less like a waiter and more like a hardened operative stepping into the cold night.

Outside the gold-trimmed revolving doors of Celeste, the autumn Manhattan air was crisp and biting.

A sleek, armor-plated Rolls-Royce Phantom sat idling quietly against the curb, its tinted windows reflecting the glittering neon of 57th Street.

A silver-haired chauffeur in an immaculate dark uniform stood at attention, opening the heavy rear passenger door the moment Vivien approached.

""Good evening, Ms. Sterling,"" the driver greeted her with a respectful tip of his cap.

""Good evening, Thomas,"" Vivien replied, stepping aside. ""Thomas, this is Ryan Carter. He will be joining us.""

Thomas offered a warm, assessing nod, his experienced eyes recognizing the military bearing in Ryan's stride instantly. ""Welcome aboard, sir.""

Ryan climbed into the spacious, butter-soft leather cabin, the heavy door closing with a vault-like thud that sealed away all the noise of the bustling city.

The interior was a masterclass in understated luxury: open-pore walnut trim, ambient amber lighting, and the subtle scent of fresh leather and blooming jasmine.

Vivien settled into the opposite captain's chair, resting her hands on her lap, watching Ryan closely as the limousine accelerated smoothly into traffic.

""You didn't seem particularly surprised when Marcus threatened you,"" Vivien noted, her head tilted slightly in curious amusement.

""Men who yell the loudest in restaurants are usually compensating for having very little real courage, Ms. Sterling,"" Ryan replied evenly, looking out through the tinted glass.

""Call me Vivien,"" she said softly.

Ryan turned to meet her gaze. ""Why did you blow up a four-hundred-million-dollar deal over a rude comment at dinner, Vivien?""

Vivien leaned back against the headrest, her emerald eyes darkening with memories of her own past.

""Because my father was an honest auto mechanic in Queens before he patented the pneumatic valve that built Sterling Dynamics,"" she revealed quietly.

""I spent my childhood watching arrogant men in bespoke suits treat my father like dirt because his fingernails were stained with motor oil,"" Vivien continued, her voice laced with quiet fire. ""I swore that the day I took control of this company, I would never break bread with men who treat working people as disposable props.""

She reached into her briefcase and pulled out a sleek, encrypted tablet.

""And besides,"" Vivien added, tapping the screen to bring up a classified personnel file, ""I don't believe in coincidences, Lieutenant Carter.""
