Chapter 6 - The Executive Suite

The private penthouse offices of Sterling Dynamics occupied the top four floors of the Park Avenue tower, offering a panoramic 360-degree vista of the glittering Manhattan skyline.
Glass walls, brushed steel fixtures, and advanced biometric security panels defined the minimalist, high-tech interior.
Vivien led Ryan into an expansive private conference room overlooking Central Park.
A pot of fresh Colombian coffee was already brewing on a marble credenza, tended to by an alert, professional woman in her early thirties carrying two thick folders.
""Good evening, Ms. Sterling,"" the woman greeted her. ""Marcus Vance’s father, Arthur Vance, has called your private line four times in the last twenty minutes. He is demanding an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning.""
""Let him demand whatever he likes, Sarah,"" Vivien dismissed with a cool wave of her hand. ""Arthur Vance doesn't hold voting equity in this building. Sarah, meet Ryan Carter.""
Sarah offered a sharp, respectful nod. ""Lieutenant Carter. It's an honor to meet you, sir.""
Vivien poured two mugs of black coffee, handing one to Ryan before sitting at the head of the long glass table.
""Here is the situation, Ryan,"" Vivien began, projecting a complex corporate organizational chart onto the room's massive digital wall display.
""Vance Equity didn't just want to partner with Sterling Dynamics on this cloud logistics initiative,"" Vivien explained, pointing to a series of offshore holding subsidiaries highlighted in red. ""They were attempting a hostile backdoor takeover of our supply chain encryption keys.""
Ryan’s sharp intelligence background took over instantly.
He stepped closer to the screen, scanning the corporate shell routing lines with practiced speed.
""These Cayman entities are structured to execute automated margin calls against your operational debt covenants,"" Ryan observed, his finger tracing a hidden financial loop. ""If your quarterly rollout experienced even a forty-eight-hour software delay, Vance Equity would automatically trigger a debt-for-equity swap.""
Sarah blinked in sheer astonishment, looking between Ryan and Vivien. ""He caught that in thirty seconds. It took our forensic accounting firm three weeks to unravel that shell.""
Vivien smiled, her emerald eyes glowing with quiet triumph. ""I told you he had a rare mind, Sarah.""
She turned back to Ryan, leaning her forearms against the table.
""My previous Director of Corporate Security and Supply Integrity resigned last week after we discovered he was taking kickbacks from Marcus Vance to ignore these backdoor vulnerabilities,"" Vivien said.
""I need someone whose integrity cannot be bought at any price,"" she continued, her voice ringing with absolute certainty. ""Someone who knows how to spot an ambush before the first shot is fired, and who isn't afraid to stand his ground against powerful bullies.""
""What are the terms?"" Ryan asked, his eyes locked onto hers.
""A base salary of four hundred and fifty thousand dollars,"" Vivien laid out without hesitation. ""Full executive health coverage with unlimited private nursing and clinical trial access for your mother at Mount Sinai, a corporate apartment on 68th Street, and full authority over our global logistics safety protocols.""
Ryan stared at the display, feeling an overwhelming wave of relief and gratitude wash over his chest.
For three grueling years, he had swallowed his pride, counting pennies behind kitchen counters, watching his mother struggle for breath while wondering if he had failed his family.
In one single evening, a woman who valued character above pedigree had reached into the dark and pulled him into the light.
""When do I start?"" Ryan asked.
May you like
Vivien rose from her chair, extending her hand across the table with a breathtaking, radiant smile.
""You start tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM, Director Carter. When Arthur Vance arrives to threaten our board.""
