Chapter 1 - The Gaze of Steel

The silence at Table Nine hardened like fast-drying cement.

Marcus's hand froze around the crystal stem of his wineglass, his face darkening into an ugly, mottled crimson.

Around them, the muted clink of silver cutlery and the soft murmur of Manhattan's elite seemed to drop into an eerie, distant background hum.

""Excuse me?"" Marcus snarled, his voice dropping into a venomous register that discarded all previous attempts at refined charm. ""Did this peasant just open his mouth to lecture me?""

Dale shifted uncomfortably in his upholstered chair, his eyes darting toward the maître d' standing fifty yards away near the brass archway.

Greg set his empty water tumbler down with an awkward clatter, suddenly fascinated by the embroidered corner of his linen napkin.

Ryan didn't flinch.

He remained standing at attention, his white towel draped neatly over his left forearm, his posture straight and immovable.

He had faced far more dangerous men than Marcus Vance during his six years in naval intelligence before returning home to care for his sick mother.

Marcus slammed his open palm onto the white tablecloth, making the bone china plates jump.

""Call your general manager right now,"" Marcus hissed, spittle flying from his lips. ""I want you stripped of that ridiculous apron and thrown out into the alley before my dessert arrives.""

""Marcus,"" a cool, quiet voice cut across the table.

It was neither loud nor theatrical.

Yet, the single word carried the sheer weight of a vault door swinging shut.

Vivien Sterling picked up her crystal water glass, took a slow, deliberate sip, and set it down without making a single sound against the glass saucer.

Her piercing emerald eyes remained fixed entirely on Ryan, scanning the faint, faded scar running along his left jawline and the steady, unblinking discipline in his stance.

""You're making a scene,"" Vivien murmured, not bothering to glance at Marcus.

""A scene?"" Marcus scoffed, leaning toward her with an oily grin. ""Vivien, darling, the help just insulted me in front of our key syndicate partners. We are negotiating a four-hundred-million-dollar tech acquisition, and this boy thinks he can offer social commentary.""

Vivien finally turned her head toward Marcus.

Her gaze was so devoid of warmth that Marcus visibly recoiled, his false grin freezing into an awkward grimace.

""You have been offering unsolicited commentary for two hours, Marcus,"" Vivien stated with razor-sharp precision. ""About his shoes. About his salary. About how fortunate he should feel to breathe the same air as your venture fund.""

Dale cleared his throat nervously. ""Vivien, Marcus was just joking around. Breaking the ice before we finalize the term sheet.""

""Was he?"" Vivien asked, turning her sharp gaze upon Dale.

Dale shrank back into his seat, instantly regretting opening his mouth.

Vivien turned back to Ryan, her expression softening by an imperceptible fraction.

""What is your name?"" she asked.

""Ryan Carter, ma'am,"" he answered evenly, keeping his hands clasped respectfully behind his back.

""Ryan,"" Vivien repeated, letting the syllables settle in the tense air between them. ""How long have you worked at Celeste?""

""Three years, ma'am. Ever since I completed my naval service.""

At the word naval, something flickered in Vivien's emerald eyes—a flash of keen recognition and immediate respect.

Marcus let out a loud, mocking bark of laughter. ""Oh, wonderful! An ex-sailor pouring cabernet! Well, sailor, consider your tour of duty terminated. Get your manager, or I will buy this entire restaurant and fire the whole staff myself.""

Vivien picked up the heavy black titanium card resting beside her phone, slid it between two manicured fingers, and extended it across the table toward Ryan.

""Close this table's check immediately, Ryan,"" Vivien commanded softly.

""Put the entire bill on my personal corporate account. And add a fifty-thousand-dollar tip for your patience.""
