Chapter 5 - The File in the Shadows

Ryan’s eyes narrowed as he caught sight of the glowing seal on the tablet screen:

Department of the Navy — Office of Naval Intelligence: Special Operations Directorate.

Below the seal sat a photograph of Ryan from four years earlier, dressed in full dress whites, adorned with the Navy Cross and two Bronze Stars with Combat Valor.

""How did you get that?"" Ryan asked, his voice tightening into a guarded, professional register.

""Sterling Dynamics develops the thermal imaging guidance systems for the Navy’s special warfare craft, Ryan,"" Vivien answered with a faint smile. ""I hold a Top Secret Department of Defense security clearance.""

She scrolled down through the operational summaries.

""Lieutenant Ryan Carter. Six years in specialized counter-maritime intelligence. Stationed in Bahrain, the South China Sea, and the Horn of Africa,"" Vivien read aloud. ""Discharged with full honors eight months ago after an off-the-books extraction mission in the Black Sea.""

Ryan looked down at his calloused hands. ""My mother was diagnosed with stage-four pulmonary fibrosis while I was deployed. I applied for compassionate discharge so I could be home to manage her oxygen therapies and clinical trials.""

""Which cost nearly eight thousand dollars a month out of pocket,"" Vivien murmured, her voice filled with profound, genuine empathy.

""I needed flexible hours that allowed me to drive her to Presbyterian Hospital at dawn and work late shifts in the evening,"" Ryan explained softly. ""Waiting tables at high-end spots paid cash tips immediately. It kept the medical bills from going into collections.""

Vivien set the tablet on the leather armrest between them, looking into his eyes with absolute sincerity.

""Your mother raised an exceptional son, Ryan,"" she said, her voice rich and steady. ""And Marcus Vance was right about one thing tonight.""

Ryan raised an eyebrow. ""What's that?""

""You were born for something much bigger than carrying wine bottles to arrogant venture capitalists,"" Vivien stated.

The limousine slowed to a halt outside an imposing limestone skyscraper on Park Avenue—the global headquarters of Sterling Dynamics.

""Come upstairs with me,"" Vivien said, unbuckling her seatbelt. ""I have a proposal that will ensure your mother receives the finest private pulmonary care in the country, and gives you a chance to put Marcus Vance in his proper place.""

Ryan looked at the soaring glass tower, then into the eyes of the woman who had walked away from millions just to defend his honor.

He didn't hesitate.

""Lead the way, Vivien.""
