Chapter 2 - The Black Card Shock

Marcus stared at the matte black American Express Centurion card hovering in the air as if it were a live grenade.

""Fifty thousand dollars?"" Greg choked, his eyes bulging behind his designer horn-rimmed glasses. ""Vivien, that's absurd! You're rewarding him for gross insubordination!""

""I am compensating an honorable man for enduring two hours of boorish vulgarity from people who mistake borrowed capital for personal class,"" Vivien replied smoothly.

Ryan looked down at the black card, then up into Vivien's unyielding emerald eyes.

""I cannot accept a tip of that magnitude, Ms. Sterling,"" Ryan said politely, his voice carrying calm dignity. ""The restaurant policy caps gratuity at thirty percent, and I do not take charity.""

Marcus let out a sneering chuckle. ""Look at that! The servant has pride! He won't even take the bone you threw him, Vivien!""

Vivien ignored Marcus completely, her respect for Ryan deepening with every passing second.

""It isn't charity, Mr. Carter,"" Vivien said, her tone brook-no-argument firm. ""It is an administrative consultation fee. Now run the card, please.""

Before Ryan could reach for the titanium card, the restaurant's general manager, a pompous man named Christian Moreau, hurried over with sweat glistening on his forehead.

Christian had watched the commotion from across the dining room and knew exactly who sat at Table Nine: the heir to Vance Equity, two senior partners of Apex Capital, and the untouchable titan Vivien Sterling.

""Is there an issue here, Mr. Vance? Ms. Sterling?"" Christian asked, bowing with nervous obsequiousness. ""I deeply apologize if our service has been unsatisfactory in any way.""

Marcus leaned back, crossing his arms with smug satisfaction.

""Moreau, your boy here just insulted my intelligence, questioned my integrity, and refused to pour our wine,"" Marcus lied without blinking. ""I want him fired immediately, his final paycheck withheld for disruptive conduct, and I want him escorted off the premises by building security.""

Christian’s face instantly darkened into bureaucratic disgust as he glared at Ryan.

""Carter, what on earth have you done?"" Christian hissed under his breath. ""You are an embarrassment to our establishment! Hand over your service apron and leave the floor this instant!""

""Christian,"" Vivien said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy cadence.

Christian spun around, offering his most charming, subservient smile. ""Yes, Ms. Sterling? I assure you, this rogue employee will not ruin your evening. I will personally open our finest bottle of Petrus for your party—""

""If you terminate Mr. Carter,"" Vivien interrupted, her words falling like guillotine blades, ""Sterling Dynamics will immediately cancel our executive dining account with the Celeste Hospitality Group.""

Christian’s mouth fell open, his eyes widening in pure horror.

The Sterling Dynamics executive corporate account accounted for over eight hundred thousand dollars in annual private dining revenue across Celeste’s three flagship Manhattan locations.

""Ms... Ms. Sterling, surely you can't be serious,"" Christian stammered, his polished accent crumbling into panicked gibberish. ""He's just a waiter! A line server!""

""And who holds the master commercial real estate lease for this entire tower on 57th Street, Christian?"" Vivien asked softly, resting her chin on her hand.

Christian’s breath hitched violently in his throat.

The master ground lease for the 57th Street skyscraper did not belong to the building management.

It belonged to the Sterling Family Heritage Trust.

""You do, ma'am,"" Christian whispered, his voice trembling so hard he could barely produce sound.

""Then you understand that if Ryan Carter walks out that door tonight,"" Vivien said, rising gracefully from her chair and buttoning her tailored black blazer, ""this restaurant will receive a formal notice of commercial lease termination before midnight.""
