Chapter 9 - The Truth Unveiled

By Monday morning, news of the Hamptons summit had swept through Wall Street like wildfire. The Wall Street Journal published a front-page article on the Meridian acquisition, prominently featuring a photograph of Arya Starling and Carter Blackwood on the steps of the Sterling estate. The headline read: The Mind Behind the Empire: How Blackwood's Hidden Prodigy Exposed Wall Street Fraud.

On the fifteenth floor of Blackwood Industries, the morning began like any other Monday. The coffee machine was still broken, the printer jammed at ten o'clock, and the murmur of back-office traders filled the room.

Around ten-thirty, the elevator chimed.

The two-note executive chime.

The floor went dead quiet. People immediately stopped typing, looking up toward the elevator bank. They expected Carter Blackwood to march through toward Tom Bradley’s empty office.

Instead, the elevator doors parted, and Arya Starling stepped out.

She wore a beautifully tailored charcoal pencil skirt, an ivory silk blouse, and elegant black pumps that clicked with crisp, rhythmic confidence against the linoleum. Her chestnut hair fell loosely around her shoulders, and her hazel eyes were bright and unshielded by glasses.

The thirty people in the cubicles stared in complete, paralyzed shock.

Sarah, an administrative assistant who had sat three desks away from Arya for two years, dropped her mug onto her desk. ""Arya...?"" she whispered, her eyes the size of saucers.

Arya smiled warmly at her. ""Good morning, Sarah.""

She walked toward her old corner cubicle behind the pillar. The plastic calendar was still on the wall; the blank mug was still on the desk. And hanging on the back of the gray chair was the oversized oatmeal cardigan.

Arya stood there for a moment, looking at the garment that had been her armor for three years. She reached out, feeling the rough wool between her fingers. She didn't hate it. It had protected her when she needed time to heal. But its time was over.

A shadow fell over her desk. Carter Blackwood stood at the edge of the cubicle, watching her with soft, affectionate eyes.

""Packing up your things, Miss Starling?"" he asked, his voice warm.

""There isn't much to pack,"" Arya replied softly.

Carter picked up the oatmeal cardigan from the back of the chair. He looked at it, then looked at her, a gentle smile curving his lips. ""May I?""

""Please,"" she laughed.

Carter walked directly over to the recycling bin near the emergency exit and dropped the cardigan inside. The entire fifteenth floor watched with held breath as the billionaire CEO turned back to the former mouse from corner 15-B and offered his arm.

""Your new office on the fortieth floor is ready,"" Carter said loud enough for every ear on the floor to hear. ""Chief Investment Strategist. Next to mine.""

Arya took his arm, her head held high, and together they walked toward the executive elevator, leaving the whispers of the past behind them forever.
