Chapter 6 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Julian’s threat hung in the salty sea air like toxic smoke. He spun on his heel with an arrogant sneer and strode back into the warmth of the ballroom, confident that he had backed them into a fatal legal corner.
Arya turned to Carter, panic threatening to drag her back into the shadows she had spent years occupying. ""Carter, he isn't bluffing. When we were engaged, I trusted him with everything. I kept all my raw mathematical proofs in handwritten leather journals. When I left Cambridge, he kept the physical notebooks. If he registered a provisional patent using those equations under Vance Capital, the IP ownership is legally murky. Arthur Sterling will never approve a deal wrapped in federal litigation!""
Carter didn't flinch. His expression shifted into that of a grandmaster who had anticipated his opponent’s move ten turns in advance.
""Come inside,"" Carter said calmly, taking her by the elbow. ""We have phone calls to make.""
They retreated to Carter’s private suite on the third floor of the Sterling estate. Away from prying eyes, Carter opened a secure satellite terminal while Arya pulled out her personal tablet, her fingers flying across the keys with lightning speed.
""He patented the framework in 2022,"" Arya said, pulling public USPTO filings. ""Patent number US-1094821-B. Look at the language here: 'Stochastic Yield Optimization System'. But Julian never understood the underlying mathematical mechanics. He just copied my summary conclusions.""
""Can you prove the math is fundamentally flawed in his filing?"" Carter asked, leaning over her shoulder, his hand resting casually against the back of her chair.
""I don't just have to prove it's flawed—I can prove it's fatal,"" Arya whispered, a sudden spark of triumph lighting her eyes. ""Look here. In 2021, when I was drafting the original framework in Boston, I caught an inherent systemic error in the dynamic hedging formula. It was a latent mathematical anomaly that only activates under high-frequency market stress. If you run the algorithm against real-time market volatility, it creates a feedback loop that forces an immediate margin liquidation.""
Carter’s eyes widened with sharp appreciation. ""A mathematical trapdoor.""
""Yes! I fixed it in my personal notes before I gave him the summaries, but I intentionally left the flawed equation in the Cambridge master draft because I suspected he was snooping through my desk!"" Arya was practically glowing, her intellectual fire blazing brightly. ""Julian was too lazy to re-derive the proofs. He patented the exact, flawed 2021 version! His proprietary software is built on an unstable bridge!""
Carter let out a low, predatory laugh that made the hairs on Arya's arms stand up. ""Miss Starling, you are terrifying.""
""If we trigger a simulated liquidity stress-test in front of the board tomorrow morning,"" Arya continued, breathless with excitement, ""Julian’s software will collapse on live monitors, while our revised framework will absorb the shock seamlessly.""
Carter pulled his smartphone from his pocket and dialed a direct number. ""Marcus, wake up our quantitative engineers at the London desk. I need a sandbox stress-test script pushed to our presentation drive by 6:00 AM. Miss Starling is emailing the parameters now.""
He hung up, looking down at Arya. The emerald dress had fallen slightly loose around her shoulders as she worked, and the soft amber lamp light reflected in her wide hazel eyes. For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
""You really hid all this behind an oatmeal cardigan?"" he asked softly, stepping closer.
Arya felt her pulse flutter in her throat. She stood up from the desk, finding herself merely inches from his chest. ""I thought if people saw the outside, they wouldn't care about what was inside.""
Carter reached out, his fingertips gently grazing the side of her jawline, trailing softly down to the base of her throat. His touch was warm, deliberate, and undeniably tender. ""Anyone who failed to see both was blind.""

Arya didn't pull away. She leaned slightly into his hand, closing her eyes for a fleeting second, allowing herself to feel desired, protected, and seen all at once.
""Get some sleep, Arya,"" he whispered, his voice thick with restraint. ""Tomorrow, we take what belongs to you.""
