Chapter 10 - Stepping Into The Light

Six months later, the terrace of the Blackwood penthouse in TriBeCa overlooked the glittering lights of Manhattan. Summer had settled over the city, wrapping the evening in warm, gentle breezes scented with blooming jasmine from the terrace planters.

Inside the penthouse, a small, intimate celebration had just concluded. Arthur Sterling and the senior board members had toasted the unprecedented success of the Meridian merger, which had delivered record quarterly returns under Arya’s flawless leadership.

Arya leaned against the terrace glass, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching the yellow cabs crawl like beetles along the avenues below. She wore a simple, elegant navy sundress, her hair tied in a loose, effortless ribbon. She was happy. She was respected. And for the first time in her life, she was entirely herself.

Arms gently wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, warm chest.

""Penny for your thoughts?"" Carter whispered, resting his chin lightly on her shoulder, his breath tickling her ear.

""I was just thinking about the elevator,"" she confessed, turning in his embrace to wrap her arms around his neck. ""About how I used to count the floor lights just to avoid making eye contact with anyone.""

Carter smiled, his hands settling possessively on the curve of her hips. ""And now?""

""Now, I don't look down anymore,"" she murmured softly, looking directly into his stormy gray eyes, which were filled with pure, undisguised adoration.

""Good,"" Carter said, his voice dropping into a tender murmur. ""Because looking down would make you miss everything you've built.""

He reached into his pocket and produced a small, velvet-lined box. He opened it to reveal a magnificent emerald cut diamond ring, resting in platinum, shimmering with breathtaking clarity.

Arya caught her breath, her eyes widening with emotion. ""Carter...""

""You spent your whole life being valued for only pieces of yourself, Arya,"" Carter said, his voice thick with raw emotion. ""Julian wanted your intellect. The corporate world wanted your silence. But I love every single piece of you. The brilliant strategist, the fierce warrior, and the woman who hid behind a giant sweater because she had been hurt too many times. I want to build a life with all of you. Will you marry me?""

Tears of pure happiness spilled over Arya's cheeks. She didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in the crook of his shoulder.

""Yes,"" she whispered, laughing through her tears. ""Yes, Carter. A thousand times yes.""

Carter slid the ring onto her finger, lifting her off her feet as he spun her around on the illuminated terrace. When he set her down, he captured her lips in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their future under the vast, glittering canopy of the New York sky.

Arya Starling had spent years hiding in the shadows to survive. But beside the man who truly saw her, she had finally stepped into the brilliant, beautiful light."
