Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Hamptons

Julian Vance stood paralyzed, his champagne glass trembling slightly in his hand as Carter guided Arya toward the terrace doors. The elite crowd, having witnessed the exchange, parted like the Red Sea, their hushed murmurs now carrying a distinctly different tone.

""Did you hear that?""

""Blackwood threatened to pull institutional liquidity over her.""

""She claimed he stole her model back in Cambridge...""

Out on the marble terrace, the cool Atlantic breeze swept off the ocean, carrying the scent of salt spray and crushed hydrangea petals. Arya leaned against the balustrade, taking deep breaths of the cold night air. Her heart was hammering like a trapped bird, but for the first time in her adult life, she felt entirely clean.

""You handled that with extraordinary poise,"" Carter said, walking up beside her. He leaned his forearms against the stone rail, his side brushing lightly against her bare arm.

""I've dreamed of saying that to his face for five years,"" Arya confessed, looking out over the dark, crashing waves below. ""Every night I stayed late at the office, fixing Bradley’s mistakes, I told myself that remaining hidden was my choice. But it wasn't. It was fear. Julian made me believe that without his name attached to me, I was nothing.""

Carter turned his head to look at her. In the moonlight, the emerald silk shimmered, and the fine lines of her profile looked carved from marble.

""You are the most brilliant analyst I have ever met, Arya,"" he said softly, sincerity vibrating in every word. ""And I don't give praise lightly. My father spent his whole life surrounding himself with loud, polished sycophants who looked the part and delivered nothing. When I saw your notes in those files, I didn't see an assistant. I saw a partner.""

Arya turned her hazel eyes to his, feeling an overwhelming warmth spread through her chest. ""Why did you really come down to the fifteenth floor yourself on Tuesday, Carter? A CEO could have easily sent an HR memo.""

Carter held her gaze, his gray eyes darkening with an emotion that had nothing to do with corporate mergers. ""Because I saw you in the elevator three weeks ago. You were wearing an awful brown sweater and those atrocious fake glasses, staring at the floor like you wished the earth would swallow you. But when a junior trader dropped an entire folder of international debt projections, you caught three pages in mid-air and murmured, 'Page seven has the yield curve inverted,' before handing them back.""

Arya blinked in surprise. ""You heard that?""

""I heard it. And I saw the brilliance you were trying so desperately to suffocate,"" Carter murmured, taking a deliberate step closer until the heat of his chest radiated against her bare back. ""I spent three weeks digging through your entire personnel file. I knew who you were before I ever stepped out on that floor.""

Before Arya could process the dizzying implications of his words, a harsh voice interrupted them from the terrace doorway.

""Very touching, Carter. But seducing your subordinates won't save your acquisition.""

Julian Vance stepped out into the terrace shadows, his tuxedo disheveled and his face twisted with desperate spite. He looked between them, his eyes lingering maliciously on the way Carter stood protectively close to Arya.

""You think you're clever, don't you, Arya?"" Julian hissed, sneering. ""Playing the damsel in distress for the billionaire prince. But tomorrow morning, Arthur Sterling demands proof of code ownership. Blackwood’s merger proposal relies on an algorithmic framework that is legally copyrighted under Vance Capital’s patent portfolio. I patented your thesis five years ago, my dear. You have no paper trail. You have no rights. The moment you present those figures tomorrow, my legal team will file an immediate federal injunction for corporate espionage against both of you.""

Arya’s breath seized. ""You patented my raw equations?""

""Every single line,"" Julian grinned savagely, taking a sip from a fresh glass of bourbon. ""You gave me the master notebooks when we were planning our wedding, remember? You were so eager to please me. Tomorrow, Blackwood either yields the acquisition rights to Vance Capital, or your little Cinderella here gets dragged out of the boardroom in handcuffs.""
