Chapter 8 - The Fall of Julian Vance

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. You could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning and the ragged, shallow breathing of Julian Vance as he stood over his disheveled papers, completely stripped bare before his peers.
""Is this true, Julian?"" Arthur Sterling demanded, his voice trembling with icy rage. ""Did you present a plagiarized, defective algorithm to my investment committee?""
""Arthur, listen to me—she was my assistant! The intellectual property was generated under my oversight—""
""Under your oversight?"" Carter Blackwood stood up, his towering presence dominating the entire room. He tossed a manila folder onto the center of the table. ""Inside that folder are the digital forensic affidavits from Harvard University's computer science archives, retrieved early this morning. The original timestamped repository for that code belongs to Arya Starling, created eighteen months before Julian Vance ever filed his fraudulent patent.""
Julian’s lead attorney opened the folder, read the first two pages, quietly closed his briefcase, and stood up. ""Mr. Vance, we are terminating our representation immediately.""
""Wait! You can't leave!"" Julian screamed, his polished composure shattering completely into frantic desperation. ""Arya, tell them! Tell them we worked on it together! You loved me!""
Arya looked at Julian. The man who had haunted her nightmares, who had driven her into oversized sweaters, thick fake glasses, and a gray cubicle behind a pillar. Looking at him now, he didn't look like a monster. He looked pathetic. Small. Hollow.
""I loved an illusion, Julian,"" Arya said quietly, with finality. ""Just like you built your entire career on one.""
Arthur Sterling rose from the head of the table. ""Security. Escort Mr. Vance off my property. Vance Capital is permanently barred from any future syndications with the Sterling Group. And I will be filing an official ethics complaint with the SEC before the market closes.""
Two large security guards entered the boardroom, taking Julian by the arms. As he was dragged toward the double doors, he thrashed, glaring at Arya with venomous hatred. ""You're nothing without him, Arya! You're just an ugly little nerd hiding behind a billionaire!""
""Get him out,"" Sterling ordered coldly.
The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind Julian, leaving an echoing silence in the room.
Arthur Sterling turned toward Arya. He walked across the room, extending his hand with deep, sincere respect. ""Miss Starling. You have saved my firm from an unmitigated financial catastrophe. It seems Carter was vastly understating your value. If Blackwood ever fails to appreciate you, my firm’s doors are wide open.""
""Thank you, Mr. Sterling,"" Arya said, shaking his hand firmly, a genuine smile illuminating her face. ""But Blackwood Industries is exactly where I belong.""

Carter stepped forward, placing a warm hand against the small of her back. ""Well, Arthur, shall we sign the merger agreements?""
""Immediately,"" Sterling agreed, laughing heartily. ""Before your chief strategist realizes she's smarter than both of us combined.""
