Chapter 2 - The Stolen Formula

Arya spent Wednesday night pacing the cramped floorboards of her rent-controlled fourth-floor studio in Queens. The radiator clanked rhythmically against the peeling wallpaper, filling the room with dry, metallic heat. On her small wooden kitchen table sat her open laptop, displaying the full financial audit of the Meridian acquisition.

Every instinct honed over the past five years screamed at her to pack her bags, leave the laptop on the counter, and take the first Greyhound bus heading west. Running was what she knew. It was what she had done when she walked away from Boston, from the prestigious Starling legacy, and from the suffocating scandal of her former fiancé, Julian Vance. Julian had smiled like an angel while stealing her postgraduate thesis, publishing her macroeconomic algorithm under his own name, and discarding her like a spent match once he secured a partnership at a rival hedge fund. That betrayal had broken something fundamental inside her. It taught her a bitter lesson: if they see you, they will use you; if they desire you, they will steal from you.

She had arrived in New York determined to be nothing more than a brain behind a veil. She bought oversized men's sweaters from thrift stores, wore shoes that deadened her steps, and let the world overlook her. It was comfortable. It was safe.

Now, Carter Blackwood had kicked down her door and shattered the glass.

At exactly 9:00 AM on Thursday, a brisk knock sounded against her apartment door. Arya opened it to find a severe, impeccably dressed woman with a sharp bob cut, flanked by two burly assistants carrying garment bags emblazoned with the logo of a high-end Fifth Avenue atelier.

""Miss Arya Starling?"" the woman asked, peering over designer sunglasses. ""I am Madame Laurent. Mr. Blackwood sent us. We have precisely four hours to prepare you for the summit.""

""Wait, I didn't agree to this—"" Arya started, backing away into the room.

""Mr. Blackwood’s instructions were very specific,"" Madame Laurent declared, striding inside and sweeping a critical eye across the studio. She paused when her gaze landed on Arya’s gray baggy sweatpants and faded flannel shirt. A look of horror crossed the stylist's face, quickly replaced by clinical determination. ""Mon Dieu. The man wasn't exaggerating. You have concealed a diamond under a pile of laundry. Boys, bring the racks!""

Before Arya could mount a defense, the room transformed into an operational theater. Garment bags were unzipped to reveal silk gowns, bespoke tailored wool trousers, crisp poplin shirts, and cashmere wraps in shades of emerald, midnight navy, and ivory. But Madame Laurent ignored the trousers entirely. She reached into a special, velvet-lined case and pulled out a cocktail gown that made the tiny apartment feel suddenly inadequate.

It was emerald green—pure Italian silk that shimmered with the liquid depth of an alpine lake. Cut on the bias, it had an architectural high neckline that swept down into a dramatic, low-draped back, designed to skim the curves without a single stitch of excess fabric.

""Take off the uniform, darling,"" Laurent instructed firmly.

""I can't wear that,"" Arya protested, her cheeks burning. ""It's backless! It's... it's practically scandalous. I am an analyst, not an escort!""

""You are representing Blackwood Industries at the private villa of Arthur Sterling,"" Laurent shot back, crossing her arms. ""In that world, power is worn like armor. Put it on, or I will have my assistants dress you like a toddler.""

Humiliated, Arya retreated into her tiny bathroom. She stripped off the baggy layers she used to hide her small waist, the gentle flare of her hips, and the smooth line of her collarbones. When she stepped into the emerald silk, the cool fabric poured down her skin like warm water. It clung lightly to her waist, cascaded over her thighs, and plunged down her back, exposing the elegant line of her spine.

She stepped out into the living area, clutching her elbows, feeling practically naked.

Madame Laurent stopped breathing for a beat. Her sharp expression melted into pure, artistic awe. ""Just as he predicted.""

Next came the hair and makeup. The assistant unpinned Arya’s chestnut hair, releasing the severe bun she had maintained for years. Thick, glossy waves fell over her bare shoulders, framing her porcelain skin and wide, hazel eyes. The stylist applied minimal foundation, accentuating her naturally arched brows, sweeping subtle gold shimmer across her lids, and painting her lips with a velvety shade of rosewood. Finally, Laurent reached for Arya’s pharmacy glasses.

""No, I need those,"" Arya panicked, reaching out. ""I can't see without them!""

""Don't lie to me, Miss Starling. Mr. Blackwood’s medical liaison had your optical records pulled this morning. Your vision is twenty-twenty,"" Laurent said, sliding the heavy black frames into her purse with a smirk. ""You used them as a disguise. Disguise time is over.""

When Arya was finally turned toward the full-length mirror brought by the crew, she choked back a gasp.

Staring back at her was not the mouse from cubicle 15-B. It was a breathtaking, regal woman whose hazel eyes burned with quiet intensity, whose posture was regal, and whose body was undeniable. For the first time in three years, Arya Starling saw herself—and the realization terrified her down to her bones.

A sudden vibration buzzed on the counter. Her phone displayed an unknown number. She tapped the screen and brought it to her ear.

""Are you ready, Miss Starling?"" Carter’s voice was smooth, dark, and intimately close.

May you like

""Mr. Blackwood,"" she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. ""This is too much. People will talk. They'll think...""

""Let them think whatever they like,"" Carter replied calmly. ""The black town car is waiting downstairs. Get in.""
