Chapter 4 - The Gala Arrival

The Sterling estate loomed against the dusk sky like a French château dropped onto the shores of the Atlantic. Valets in formal livery scrambled along the circular cobblestone driveway, parking a fleet of Ferraris, Bentleys, and Rolls-Royces. High-society laughter and the refined strumming of a live string quartet drifted through the open double doors of the grand foyer.

When Carter’s Maybach pulled to the red carpet, a small crowd of journalists and business elite turned their heads. Carter Blackwood was notoriously elusive; he rarely brought guests to social galas, and he never brought women from his firm.

The chauffeur opened the door. Carter stepped out, buttoning his bespoke tuxedo jacket. He paused, turned back, and extended his hand into the vehicle.

Arya took a deep, steadying breath. Remember who you are, she told herself. You are not the cardigan. You are the mind.

She placed her hand in his and stepped out onto the gravel.

The low hum of conversations on the grand steps instantly ceased.

Arya stood tall in the crisp evening breeze, the emerald silk gown rippling around her slender frame, the low back showcasing the porcelain curve of her skin. Her hair cascaded in loose, glossy waves over her shoulder, framing a face of striking, aristocratic beauty that held none of the timidness of cubicle 15-B.

Carter did not rush her. He tucked her hand firmly into the crook of his arm, leaning down slightly. ""Breathe,"" he whispered against her ear, his breath warm against her temple. ""You own this room.""

Together, they walked up the stone steps and through the towering arched doorway.

The grand ballroom was illuminated by three massive crystal chandeliers that cast fractured golden light over diamonds, velvet tuxedos, and designer champagne flutes. As they crossed the threshold, heads snapped around. Whispers swept across the floor like a sudden gust of wind.

""Who is she?"" an elderly socialite whispered behind a diamond-encrusted fan.

""Is that Blackwood’s new partner? I’ve never seen her on Wall Street.""

""Good God, she looks like royalty.""

Across the crowded room, standing beside host Arthur Sterling, Julian Vance held court with an arrogant smirk plastered across his handsome, patrician face. He was laughing at a joke, swirling a glass of vintage champagne, when his gaze drifted toward the entrance.

The glass slipped in Julian’s grip, sloshing champagne over his cuff. His smirk vanished entirely. The color drained from his face as if he had just witnessed a ghost rise from a grave in broad daylight.

Arya felt Carter’s arm flex beneath her hand. ""He sees you,"" Carter said quietly, a grim satisfaction lacing his tone.

""I see him too,"" Arya said, her voice completely steady now. The fear that had paralyzed her for five years suddenly burned away, replaced by an icy, crystalline focus.

Arthur Sterling, a barrel-chested man with silver hair and an imperious scowl, noticed Carter and detached himself from Julian, walking toward them with heavy, deliberate steps.

""Carter! You finally made it,"" Sterling boomed, though his eyes immediately shifted to Arya, filled with blatant curiosity. ""I heard you had some restructuring in your quantitative division this morning. Fired Bradley, did you?""

""Bradley was a placeholder,"" Carter answered dismissively. ""Arthur, allow me to introduce the real architect of our portfolio. This is Miss Arya Starling, my Senior Vice President of Strategic Forecasting.""

Sterling blinked in astonishment, quickly taking her hand and bowing slightly over it. ""Miss Starling. An honor. Any mind that Carter trusts with his balance sheet must be formidable indeed. Though, Vance here was just telling us your pricing models are hopelessly optimistic.""

Julian had walked over, his eyes wide, frantic, and burning with venomous panic. He forced an uneasy, patronizing smile, stepping into the circle.

""Arya?"" Julian laughed nervously, trying to establish dominance before she could speak. ""Well, well. It's been years. I hardly recognized you without your... academic library garb. Mr. Sterling, I wouldn't place too much stock in her numbers. Arya was my former student assistant in Cambridge. A brilliant girl, certainly, but she always had a habit of letting emotional bias compromise her stochastic calculations.""

The circle fell dead silent. A few onlookers leaned in, sensing blood in the water.

Arya smiled. It was a cool, effortless smile that did not reach her eyes.

""Julian,"" she said, her voice carrying clearly across the quieted salon. ""If by 'emotional bias' you mean the fact that I refused to manipulate the tail-risk ratios on the 2021 liquidity model—the very model you presented under your own name to secure your first seed round—then yes, I am very biased. Biased toward actual solvency.""

Julian’s jaw locked. His neck flushed a mottled, violent red. ""You're out of line, Arya. Don't invent fairy tales to mask your bitterness over our broken engagement.""

""Careful, Vance,"" Carter’s voice dropped an octave, radiating cold menace that caused Julian to take half a step backward. ""You are speaking to my senior strategist. If you have an argument with her methodology, bring it to the boardroom tomorrow morning. But if you insult her character in my presence again, I will personally pull Blackwood liquidity from every bank that carries your firm's debt before the markets open on Monday.""
