Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Midnight returned to Chicago, but the air was entirely different. The storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, biting cold that froze the puddles on the gravel driveway of Blackwood House.

In the reinforced sub-basement beneath the wine cellars, a single overhead bulb illuminated Walter Mercer. He sat tied to a heavy steel chair, his face bruised and swollen from the altercation the night before. His expensive silk shirt was ruined, his hands bound tightly behind his back.

The heavy iron door swung open with a mournful creak.

Adrian walked into the room alone. He carried no weapons, no ledgers, and no bodyguards. He pulled up an empty wooden crate and sat directly across from the man who had been his father’s confidant and his own lifelong mentor.

Walter lifted his head, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the concrete. ""So... the prodigal son returns. Did you find your dead wife’s ghost, Adrian? Or did you just come down here to shoot your uncle like a rabid dog?""

""I don't need to shoot you, Walter,"" Adrian said calmly, his voice smooth and steady. ""Death is too fast for a man who spent four years watching an innocent girl hide in a wooden shed while her baby caught pneumonia in the snow.""

Walter gave a bitter, mocking laugh. ""You're getting sentimental. It makes you weak. Your father would have put a bullet through my skull the second he found that override code.""

""My father died an angry, suspicious old man surrounded by mercenaries who secretly hated him,"" Adrian replied, leaning forward slightly. ""You wanted my empire, Walter? You wanted Mercer Logistics to take over the Great Lakes shipping corridors? Well... congratulations. You have an audience.""

Adrian reached into his coat and produced a satellite tablet, setting it down on a metal tray in front of Walter.

On the screen was a live video conference with the leaders of the five major logistics syndicates of the Midwest—the very men Walter had secretly negotiated with to orchestrate Claire's downfall.

""Gentlemen,"" Adrian spoke clearly into the microphone. ""For forty-eight hours, you believed Walter Mercer was speaking on behalf of the Vale family. You believed I was distracted by personal tragedy. What you are currently looking at is the raw ledger recovered from Walter’s private offshore account in Grand Cayman, detailing twenty-six covert wire transfers totaling forty million dollars—stolen directly from your joint pension and port insurance funds.""

Walter's eyes bulged in absolute terror. ""Adrian! No! Shut it off! Shut the damn screen off!""

The syndicate bosses on the screen went deathly still. One of them, an elderly boss from Detroit, spoke through the speaker with cold fury. ""Is this verified, Adrian?""

""Every routing number,"" Adrian replied calmly. ""Cole Mercer, Walter’s own son, audited the manifests two hours ago. As of midnight, I have liquidated Walter's entire domestic estate and refunded your stolen capital in full. But Walter’s fate no longer belongs to me. In ten minutes, the Chicago Federal Bureau of Investigation will arrive at our north gate. They have a full confession written in Walter’s handwriting, security footage from the clinic hit four years ago, and thirty years of tax fraud documents.""

""Federal prison?"" Walter screamed, thrashing against his ropes in panic. ""You’re handing me to the feds?! In general population?! The families will slaughter me in forty-eight hours!""

Adrian stood up slowly, picking up his tablet and slipping it back into his coat. He looked down at Walter with neither anger nor malice—only the complete, icy indifference one reserves for garbage tossed onto the curb.

""You told me that an heir makes a man weak, Walter,"" Adrian said softly as he turned toward the door. ""You were wrong. An heir makes a man realize what is actually worth fighting for. And what is worth leaving in the dirt.""

Adrian walked out of the room, letting the heavy steel door slam shut behind him, locking Walter Mercer in the dark forever.
