Chapter 10 - The Garden of Vale

Six months later.

The warm spring sun sparkled across the crystal-clear waters of Lake Superior. The gentle breeze rustled through blooming apple orchards surrounding a sprawling, stone-and-timber farmhouse perched atop a rolling green bluff. There were no armed guards on the perimeter. There were no surveillance towers, no armored gates, and no black sedans idling in the gravel lanes.

Blackwood House had been sold to a medical research university, the proceeds redirected into a national foundation for women fleeing domestic violence and organized crime. The Vale Syndicate was officially a closed chapter in the archives of Chicago's history.

On the wooden back porch overlooking the water, Claire sat comfortably in a wicker rocking chair, a sketchbook resting in her lap. Her cheeks were full of color, her skin radiant in the midday light. Her health had returned completely, her laughter once again bright and effortless.

""Daddy! Catch the potato!""

Down on the emerald-green lawn, four-year-old Maisie was running at full speed in a bright yellow sundress. Her hair was completely uncovered now, a brilliant, thick streak of pure Vale white shining like silver in the sunlight. In her hands, she clutched a clumsy clay sculpture she had baked in town that morning.

Adrian Vale—wearing an unbuttoned denim shirt, rolled-up sleeves, and faded jeans—knelt in the soft grass with both arms wide open. The broad tattoos covering his forearms and neck were still there, but the permanent tension in his shoulders had completely vanished.

Maisie collided into his chest with a squeal of pure joy. Adrian caught her effortlessly, swinging her high into the air as her bright, musical laughter drifted across the open meadow.

""Is this the famous dragon?"" Adrian asked, inspecting the lumpy brown clay in her hand with great seriousness.

""I told you, it’s a potato dragon,"" Maisie insisted proudly, wrapping her arms around his neck and pressing a sticky kiss to his cheek. ""He breathes warm french fries!""

""Very dangerous,"" Adrian chuckled, carrying her up the wooden steps toward the porch. ""We have to keep him away from the ketchup.""

Claire smiled warmly as they reached the porch, setting down her pencil to reach for Adrian’s hand. He sat on the porch bench beside her, letting Maisie perch happily on his knee while she inspected Claire's drawing.

""Look, Mommy drew us!"" Maisie pointed excitedly.

On the page was a delicate charcoal sketch of the three of them standing together on the bluffs, the vast blue lake stretching out into an endless horizon. Beneath the drawing, Claire had written a simple inscription: The Beginning.

Adrian looked at his wife, squeezing her fingers gently. The ghosts of the past were gone, the bullets buried, the lies dissolved into the light of the new morning. He leaned in and kissed her softly on the lips, tasting the sweet spring air and the warmth of a life he had never thought he was allowed to possess.

""You happy here?"" Adrian whispered, his eyes soft with profound peace.

May you like

Claire leaned her head against his broad shoulder, watching the silver streak in their daughter’s hair dance in the warm lake wind.

""I've never been anywhere else,"" Claire murmured softly. ""We're finally home."""
