Chapter 6 - The Long Road North

By dawn, Blackwood House was swarming with Adrian’s most trusted inner circle. Cleaners scrubbed the marble stairs, and the local precinct commanders—men on Adrian’s payroll for over a decade—were quietly instructed to file the night's events as an electrical transformer explosion followed by an isolated perimeter fire. Walter Mercer was locked in the reinforced sub-basement under heavy guard, awaiting a judgment that everyone knew was coming.

Adrian stood in his private garage, dressed in a clean black sweater and heavy wool coat. A black, armored SUV sat idling on the concrete, its windows tinted opaque.

Cole stood by the driver's side, his ribs tightly wrapped in medical gauze, his face pale but determined. ""The road to Wisconsin is clear, boss. I dispatched two advance scout cars to sweep the highway sixty miles ahead of us. No tails. No chatter on the private frequencies.""

Nora emerged from the elevator holding Maisie, who was bundled in a thick pink winter coat, clutching her worn stuffed rabbit tightly in her arms. The white lock of hair was visible now, curling naturally against her forehead without the headband that had hidden it for so long.

Adrian took his daughter into his arms, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of her tiny heart against his collarbone. ""You ready for a long ride, Maisie?""

""Are we going to see Mommy?"" Maisie asked, her eyes bright with sudden excitement. ""Mommy has been having coughs for three weeks. She told me the birds would bring her medicine.""

Adrian swallowed hard, glancing at Nora with a look of fierce protectiveness. ""Yes, baby. We're going to bring Mommy home.""

The drive north was agonizingly quiet. Miles of gray Illinois farmland blurred past the armored glass as snow began to dust the barren cornfields. Adrian kept Maisie asleep in his lap for most of the three-hour journey, his scarred hand resting protectively over her small back. Every bump in the road, every passing semi-truck on the interstate made his muscles tense, his mind replaying the horror of the four lost years he could never get back.

He had believed a lie. He had allowed Walter's poisonous whispering to erode his faith in the only woman who had ever looked past his violent empire to see his soul. He had broken her heart, cast her into the wilderness, and nearly cost his daughter her life before she had even drawn her first breath. The weight of that guilt was heavier than any physical wound he had ever suffered.

""We turn off here,"" Nora said from the front passenger seat, pointing toward an unmarked gravel lane winding through a dense forest of pines. ""The cottage is two miles deep into the tree line. There are no power poles. We used solar banks and firewood.""

Cole slowed the vehicle, turning the tires onto the crunching snow of the unpaved road. The forest grew thick and claustrophobic around them, branches scraping against the SUV's roof like skeletal fingers.

As they rounded the final bend, a small, cedar-shake cabin appeared in a clearing beside a frozen pond. Thin gray smoke curled lazily from a stone chimney.

Adrian’s breath caught in his throat. His entire empire, his billions in real estate, his fleet of shipping vessels, and his army of loyal men suddenly felt completely meaningless. Everything he was, everything he had ever cared about, was inside that humble, isolated cabin in the snow.
