Chapter 5 - A Father’s Shield

The third floor was blanketed in an eerie, terrifying quiet. Smoke drifted from the ventilation shafts, and the faint smell of burned gunpowder hovered in the air. Adrian reached the top landing, his boots slipping slightly on the polished hardwood, his eyes scanning every dark corner and entryway.

Two bodies lay motionless outside the private quarters. They were mercenaries, both neutralized by clean, center-mass double taps. Cole had held the line, but the heavy oak door leading to Nora and Maisie's private suite was kicked open, its brass lock sheared clean off the frame.

Adrian breached the room in a low crouch, weapon raised.

Inside, Cole Mercer was slumped against the wall, clutching his bleeding side where a knife wound had sliced through his tactical vest. Across the room, Nora was cornered behind a heavy mahogany wardrobe, holding a shattered floor lamp like a spear, shielding the tiny blonde girl trembling behind her legs.

Between them stood the mercenary squad leader, his rifle leveled directly at the child.

""Drop it!"" Adrian bellowed, his voice carrying the authority of a sovereign king.

The shooter reacted fast, spinning his muzzle toward the doorway, but Adrian was faster. He fired three rapid rounds, his bullets finding their mark before the mercenary could pull his trigger. The man collapsed heavily against the carpet, his weapon skidding harmlessly across the floor.

Silence crashed back over the room. Adrian stood in the doorway, his chest heaving, his dark clothes soaked in sweat, rain, and blood.

Nora sank slowly to her knees, weeping from pure adrenaline and relief.

From behind Nora’s trembling legs, little Maisie cautiously peeked her head out. Her big blue eyes were wide, taking in the smoke, the shattered glass, and the imposing, bloodied figure of the man who had terrified Chicago’s most ruthless criminals for twenty years.

Adrian immediately tucked his weapon behind his back, falling to his knees on the carpet just as he had done on the staircase hours before. He tried to hide the trembling in his hands, terrified that she would look at him and see only a monster.

Maisie stepped out from behind Nora. She walked slowly toward him, her tiny bare feet making no sound on the floor. She stopped right in front of him, reaching out her small, warm hand to touch the scrape across his cheek where the broken glass had cut him.

""You got an owie, Mister Adrian,"" she said softly, her lower lip quivering slightly.

Adrian couldn't hold back the sudden wave of emotion that crushed his throat. A tear cut a clean line through the soot on his cheek. He gently reached up, his massive, calloused fingers cradling her small face with a tenderness that no one living had ever seen him display.

""I'm okay, sweetheart,"" Adrian whispered, his voice cracking into pieces. ""I'm okay because you're safe.""

Maisie looked down at the dark stains on his cuffs. ""Did the bad monsters come for my headband?""

""Nobody is ever coming for your headband again,"" Adrian promised, pulling her tiny frame gently against his chest, wrapping his massive arms around her as if shielding her from the entire universe. ""Daddy’s got you now. Daddy’s never letting anyone hurt you again.""

Maisie hugged his neck tightly, burying her face into his wet collar. ""You smell like thunder, Daddy.""

Adrian squeezed his eyes shut, letting the tears fall freely into her hair. He had his daughter. But somewhere out in the Wisconsin woods, his wife was waiting, hunted, sick, and alone. The battle for Blackwood House was over, but the war for his family had just begun.
