Chapter 8 - Sins of the Past

Claire looked at the man standing on her porch. She saw the fresh cuts on his face, the dark smudges under his eyes, and the complete absence of the terrifying, unyielding mob boss who had ruled Chicago with an iron fist. The arrogance was gone. The coldness was shattered. In front of her stood only a broken man begging for redemption.
She looked down at Maisie, whose tiny hands were patting Claire's shoulders in a comforting rhythm. ""Daddy saved us from the bad monsters, Mommy,"" Maisie said, her voice innocent and clear. ""He hugged me real tight.""
Claire let out a shuddering breath, a tear falling from her chin. She stood up slowly, her knees shaking, and reached out her hand. Not to strike him. Not to push him away.
She placed her palm against Adrian's rough, scarred cheek.
Adrian closed his eyes at her touch, leaning his face into her warmth, his shoulders shaking with a silent, heavy sob. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her against his chest as if anchoring her back into reality. For several minutes, neither of them spoke. The sound of their shared tears filled the small wooden cabin, washing away years of silence, terror, and grief in the quiet heart of the Wisconsin woods.
""Walter is in the sub-basement,"" Adrian whispered into her hair, his voice steadying with grim resolve. ""He was the one behind the documents, Claire. He hired the mercenaries that tried to run you off the road. He tried to kill Maisie last night.""
Claire pulled back, her eyes flashing with a sudden, icy fire that surprised even Adrian. ""I know. When I was pregnant in that clinic, Nora caught one of Walter's private security couriers staking out the pharmacy where my prescriptions were filled. He wanted you weak, Adrian. He wanted you alone so he could take over the shipping terminals without resistance.""
""He will never see the sun again,"" Adrian said coldly. ""His trial is tonight. But you and Maisie are coming home.""
""Home?"" Claire gave a sad, bitter smile. ""Blackwood House is a fortress of blood, Adrian. I spent two years terrified inside those stone walls. I won't raise my daughter in a place where men with automatic weapons patrol the rose gardens.""
Adrian took both of her hands into his own, kissing her knuckles gently. ""Blackwood House is being sold, Claire. The Vale Syndicate is done.""
Cole Mercer, standing by the porch stairs, looked up in stunned surprise. Nora gasped.
""I spent twenty years building a kingdom of shadows because I thought it was the only way to keep what I loved safe,"" Adrian said, looking Claire directly in the eyes. ""It almost cost me everything. The legitimized holdings—the transport company, the private port authority, the renewable energy plants—will be transferred to a clean, public trust under your name and Maisie's. The illicit trades, the backroom enforcers, the whole dirty empire... I am burning it all to the ground. We leave Chicago forever.""
Claire searched his face, looking for any trace of deception, but found only the fierce, unyielding devotion of a man who had finally found his true purpose.

""Where would we go?"" she asked softly.
Adrian smiled gently, brushing a loose strand of hair from her forehead. ""Anywhere where the snow melts into grass. Anywhere Maisie can draw dragons on her arms without hiding her hair.""
